Subject: ITP: alacarte -- tile renderer for OpenStreetMap using Cairo and MapCSS
Date: Sat, 13 Apr 2013 07:56:54 +0200
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Andrew Shadura <andrewsh@debian.org>

* Package name    : alacarte
  Version         : 0.2.1
  Upstream Author : Institut für Theoretische Informatik et al.
* URL             : http://github.com/alacarte-maps/alacarte/
* License         : AGPL-3+
  Programming Lang: C++11
  Description : tile renderer for OpenStreetMap using Cairo and MapCSS

 alaCarte is a tile renderer for OpenStreetMap data written in C++11,
 using Cairo for rendering and Boost-Spirit for MapCSS parsing.
 .
 The rendered tiles are served over HTTP using the Slippy map tilenames
 convention. To compute which data is needed for rendering a tile,
 alaCarte uses a variant of a kd-Tree.
 .
 alaCarte was designed with medium dataset size in mind. On a typical
 machine with at leat 8GB RAM, alaCarte can handle a unfiltered export
 from the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg (Germany).
 .
 Features:
  * easy to use
  * most MapCSS attributes are implemented
  * no need to filter OSM exports, you have full access to all attributes at runtime
  * stylesheets are updated at runtime (changes are detected automatically)
  * tiles can be rendered in groups ("meta tile") to speed up rendering

P.S. The package is ready and working, but I think to wait a little bit until the
upstream does the next release — I'm packaging from Git currently.

alacarte is also the name of gnome's menu editor, and is packaged in
Debian under the same name [1].

Oh, well, then I have to rename it: I didn't actually check the package
name yet. Probably acalarte-map-server would be better.

... which is the (unrelated) GNOME menu editor. Call this new thing
alacarte-maps after its github username, perhaps?

Well, I don't quite understand why third person comments on this; I've
replied to Vincent right after he pointed out the name is already
taken; when KiBi told me the same thing, I've retitled the bug.
Meanwhile, still this post attracts people. Why?

Ah, I see; that mail didn't go to the debian-devel@. It's here,
however: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=705324

Hi Andrew,

you might like to maintain this package inside the Debian GIS team where
other OSM related packages are maintained as well.

Kind regards

      Andreas.

Yes, I think that's what I'll do, and probably move twms under the
umbrella as well.
