Package: cacti
Version: 0.8.8a+dfsg-3
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
After performing an in-place upgrade on my server from Debian squeeze to wheezy, Cacti was no longer able to gather any data. I tried executing some of Cacti's PHP scripts separately, but they could retrieve no SNMP data.
In an attempt to find the cause of the problem, I downgraded php5-snmp 5.4.4 to 5.3.3. This fixed the problem: the scripts worked again and Cacti worked again. However, it results in a serious dependency problem, so is not really a solution.

Hi Jaap,
Could you please increase the Poller Logging Level in the General
Settings to Debug or High for at least one cacti run and post the
content of the relevant part of /var/log/cacti/cacti.log
/var/log/cacti/poller_error.log and /var/log/cacti/rrd.log ? Maybe there
is useful information there.
An other option might be to check what the output is of a manual run of
the poller:

See attachment, cacti.log.gz, for one cacti run at debug level.

It just contains the following error, over and over again:
Mar 25 22:50:04 PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic

This file exists, but is empty.

Clearly this is (part of) the issue. Something is going wrong during php
startu. I reassign this bug to php5-snmp, so some php experts can have a
look.
@php5-snmp maintainers: any hint on how to debug this properly? If you
think this is still a Cacti bug, don't hesitate to reassign back.

The error comes from the fact that php5-snmp was downgraded to 5.3.3.
It doesn't make any sense that this should fix the error. PHP has changed
PHPAPI between 5.3.x and 5.4.x, so 5.3.3 module cannot be loaded into 5.4.4
php.
There must be something else going on and it needs to be debugged with
appropriate php5-snmp package (e.g. 5.4.4-14).

You are correct. I decided to examine the logs to see what was
happening after the in-place upgrade to wheezy, but before the
php5-snmp downgrade. Here'a a sample of Cacti's poller-error.log just
after the upgrade:
Mar 17 23:20:01 PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic
library '/usr/lib/php5/20100525+lfs/pam_auth.so' -

So, back then it wasn't missing snmp.so, but pam_auth.so. The above
pattern of errors kept repeating until 06:00 AM, after which only the
first error regarding pam_auth.so remained. That one went on for
several days. After that I got Cacti to work again by downgrading
php5-snmp to 5.3.3. The errors about the missing snmp.so started after
I upgraded back to 5.4.4-14 for the sake of this bug report.

I've upgraded it again around the time I submitting this bug report
and since then Cacti hasn't worked. No more errors in the
poller-error.log either, although the cacti.log keeps repeating these
error ('atheris' is a workstation):
03/28/2013 03:40:02 AM - CMDPHP: Poller[0] WARNING: SNMP Get Timeout

Interestingly, I tried downgrading php5-snmp to v5.3.3 a second time,
but that no longer makes a difference.

Message #45 received at 704011@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: php5-snmp
Version: 5.4.4-14
Regarding my last message, the errors about a missing pam_auth.so had
nothing to do with this problem. That file is found in php5-auth-pam,
which is not in wheezy. Apparently it was still present, but not
functioning properly, no doubt due to some missing dependencies, so
removing that package was the fix.
Otherwise I've discovered the cause of the original problem -- the
reason for this bug report -- and I figure it must be related to
php5-snmp.
What I found was that the php scripts that Cacti uses to query the
localhost are now being sent using IPv6 instead of IPv4 as before. My
local snmp daemon was listening on IPv6, but unfortunately I had
neglected to include a directive for 'rocommunity6' set to 'public',
so that's why in my case Cacti stopped recording localhost information
after the upgrade from squeeze.
Cacti had also stopped recording information about my workstations,
but this was for a different reason. In this case, php5-snmp 5.4.4-14
seems to have changed how Cacti's hostname field in its device
descriptions is allowed to be formatted. Specifically, I had
previously been adding hostnames with the format
"udp6:host.domain.tld" so that they would only be contacted via IPv6.
However, with the new version of php5-snmp that format no longer works
and I must omit the 'udp6:' part. That certainly doesn't work on the
Debian squeeze machines with Cacti that I still have running.
I'm still pretty sure this has to do with the upgrade to php5-snmp
5.4.4-14, because the temporary downgrade to 5.3.3 that I performed
last Monday did fix things for a while and I have about six hours of
Cacti data to prove it (for both the localhost and the workstations).
Now, so far I've managed to get everything working again because all
of the hosts and services that I monitor with Cacti are also available
via IPv6, but I'm not sure what I would do to monitor an IPv4-only
host, or an IPv6-capable host with an snmp daemon that does not
support IPv6.
Cheers,
Jaap

Hi Ondřej,
One last thing I can add is that the only way I can get Cacti to
communicate with IPv4-only snmp clients is by entering their IPv4
addresses in the hostname field. So php5-snmp and snmp.so are able to
work with IPv4 as long as there is no need to resolve a hostname.
