Subject: Live image fails to boot (hangs) when using "debug" with LUKS persistence
Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2013 03:37:43 +0000
Package: live-boot
Version: 4.0~a7-1
Severity: important

This may be related to Bug#700902 (marked "resolved", LUKS persistence
does actually work in 4.0~a7-1)

When using "debug" with LUKS persistence however the system hangs at
this point (the "live-boot" log does not seem to start at all):

ohci_hcd: USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OHCI) Driver

Kernel: 3.2.0-4-686-pae
Architecture: i386
Live image used: custom Wheezy (otherwise working normally) with all
live-* packages from sid

I tested this with a syslinux-type usb setup, using a manually rebuilt
initrd with /lib/live/ replaced with that from 4.0~a7-1, that should be
enough without rebuilding the actual image. It behaves the same on two
different machines (but works without "debug")

Can't save the log so it's difficult to give much more info.

David Hare

please make sure you have matching versions of live-* in the image,
either that being *both* live-config/live-boot 3.x, or *both* 4.x, but
not mixed versions.

also, just to make sure.. i assume you can reproduce it with a 'clean'
built image on virtualbox too, right?

Reason for my interest is, I need luks-persistence working on a custom
wheezy build. It does not work at all with live-boot 3x from sid.

Anyway I rebuilt this (wheezy) image with all 4x versions from
experimental. Live-debconfig was a required dep.. took some time to
learn how to configure that before things would work.

:/# dpkg -l|grep live-|awk '{print $1 " " $2 " " $3}'
ii live-boot 4.0~a7-1
ii live-boot-doc 4.0~a7-1
ii live-boot-initramfs-tools 4.0~a7-1
ii live-config 4.0~a15-1
ii live-config-doc 4.0~a15-1
ii live-config-sysvinit 4.0~a15-1
ii live-debconfig 4.0~a18-1
ii live-debconfig-doc 4.0~a18-1
ii live-tools 4.0~a8-1

It seems to work normally except:

With luks persistence and "debug" used together it hangs in exactly the
same way as before!

Can't do anything useful here with virtualbox, too slow.

I did run the iso in VB and it boots. I even made a luks persist
partition in the VM and it works.. but with debug it still hangs (a
little differently) as before:

uhci_hcd: USB Universal Host Controller Interface Driver
Initializing USB Mass Storage Driver...
usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage
USB Mass Storage support registered

HANG

Package: live-boot
Version: 3.0.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #700984

Dear Maintainer,

wait for at least 10 sec, type the password for luks and the
the boot continued
the full debug log is then present

debug seems to block the output of luksopen

best regards
peter Schaefer

Confirmed here, behaves just like that with my custom wheezy. Thanks
Peter, knowing that at least makes it usable.
