Package: installation-reports
When I try install Debian (
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.6/amd64/iso-cd/debian-6.0.6-amd64-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso)
I boot from my hdd with grub:
menuentry 'debian-6.06-amd64.iso' {
loopback loop /debian.iso
linux (loop)/install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 iso-scan/filename=/debian.iso
-- quiet
initrd (loop)/install.amd/initrd.gz
}
But the option "iso-scan/filename" not work (Ok. It's normal. It's work
with a Ubuntu *.iso. I try it for Debian, but without success.) The Debian
image not include kernel module loop.ko, so not with the option, not
manually I can't mount iso-file
and install Debian. That's bad, but not fatal.
I find here (
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apas02.html#howto-getting-images-hard-disk)
a way install Debian from my hdd with iso-file. I boot with this (
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-amd64/current/images/hd-media/{initrd.gz,vmlinuz})
and try this (
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/current/images/hd-media/{initrd.gz,vmlinuz})
too, but both of them don't have kernel module pata_amd.ko and my hdd don't
appears in /dev after boot and I can't install Debian. I don't know, is it
a bug or not? It's no fatal for me, too. I boot and install Debian from my
usb flash drive, but more convenient ways is desirable. Thanks.
P.s. I'm sorry for my English. I hope it don't hurt your heart and ruin
your brain.

The Ubuntu *.iso may be built differently. Possibly it is a Live one.

'ls -l /dev/loop*' shows /dev/loop0.

menuentry 'debian-6.06-amd64.iso' {
loopback loop /debian.iso
linux (loop)/install.amd/vmlinuz
initrd (loop)/install.amd/initrd.gz
boots the ISO for me. "loop0" for "loop" is OK too. The problems start
at the detecting and mounting the CD-ROM stage. To avoid them you need
a netboot mini ISO.

I'm very surprised you find installing from a USB flash drive less
convenient than a hard disk install. Having i386 and and64 ISOs as
isohybrids is one of the best things which has happened in Debian in
recent years.

Thanks for your answer, Brian Potkin.

Ok. I see /dev/loop0 too. But if I try mount iso file
mount -t iso9660 -o loop /mnt/sda1/debian.iso /mnt/iso ##
/mnt/sda1/debian.iso and /mnt/iso is present
console hangs, but Ctrl-C helps. After that in /dev appears huge
number loops (loop0...loop0999 ... loop9...loop999).
May you show a way mount this iso image after boot from one?

I know about netboot mini iso, but I wish to have possibility install
debian from main iso-images. At least with manual way, but the
automatic method with "iso-scan/filename=" is desirable.

I'm very glad of all Debian community it has happened with them. Only
I want little more.
Let's look at http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-amd64/current/images/hd-media/{initrd.gz,vmlinuz}.
If I do command on this I see:
ls /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel/drivers/ata/
ahci.ko
ata_generic.ko
ata_piix.ko
libata.ko
pata_sis.ko
pdc_adma.ko
sata_inic162x.ko
sata_mv.ko
sata_nv.ko
sata_promise.ko
sata_qstor.ko
sata_sil.ko
sata_sil24.ko
sata_sis.ko
sata_svw.ko
sata_sx4.ko
sata_uli.ko
sata_via.ko
sata_vsc.ko
Why pata_sis.ko present on this image, but pata_amd.ko not? Sis lobby
more powerful and rich then amd one? :)
In my case I need pata_sis.ko for recognize my hdd and then partitions
on it. Only after that I can manually or with auto-search from
installer find a appropriate Debian iso image and install one. Is
hd-media images for usb-hdd only? This link
(http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apas02.html#howto-getting-images-hard-disk)
say NOT.
Let's look at http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0.6/amd64/iso-cd/debian-6.0.6-amd64-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso:
ls /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel/drivers/ata/
ahci.ko
ata_generic.ko
ata_piix.ko
libata.ko
pata_ali.ko
pata_amd.ko
pata_artop.ko
pata_atiixp.ko
pata_cmd64x.ko
pata_cs5520.ko
pata_cs5530.ko

pata_serverworks.ko
pata_sil680.ko
pata_sis.ko
pata_triflex.ko
pata_via.ko
pdc_adma.ko
sata_inic162x.ko
sata_mv.ko
sata_nv.ko

sata_sil24.ko

sata_svw.ko
sata_sx4.ko
sata_uli.ko
sata_via.ko
sata_vsc.ko
What is funny... It have pata_amd, but haven't loop.ko. Hd-media
have loop.ko, but not many needed pata_xxx.ko. I'm confused.
It's all I want to say. Thanks for your attention.

Hi,
thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.
I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they were caused by broken hardware and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are quite old (and thus likely fixed today) and/or
- moreinfo was asked and not given or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)
If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.
cheers,
Holger
