[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: gnome-session
Version: 3.4.2-2
Severity: minor

The GNOME3 desktop is not aware of change events of the X property
_NET_DESKTOP_GEOMETRY(CARDINAL).

We (X2Go upstream) currently test all recent desktop shells with
nxagent (NX) as X-Server. I am aware of NX not being latest X-Server
code, but many people use NX for remote access to Linux desktops, so
this may be relevant to people using Debian.

The X2Go upstream nx-libs code base is here:
http://code.x2go.org/gitweb?p=nx-libs.git;a=summary

X2Go server packages can be obtained from here:

deb http://packages.x2go.org/debian wheezy main

The phenomen is this:

  o Launch NX/X2Go session (GNOME -> gnome3) with screen size 800x600
o a 800x600 window with the top-left corner of a GNOME desktop appears
o the desktop shell has the size of the client machine (the machine running
NX client / X2Go client), not the size of the NX agent window, so the
desktop shell does not fit inside the window
o if you pick one of the corners of the 800x600-NX-window with the mouse and
try to resize it the window does indeed resize. Not so the
session elements
inside, they do not adapt their sizes (panel, background, etc.)

With XFCE4 or KDE4 the elements inside the desktop do resize properly
and adapt to the size of the nxagent window.

Hope, that someone in the Gome packaging team has an interest in this
and an idea what the cause for this can be.

I guess, this issue has to be forwarded to upstream, but may I ask
someone of the packaging team to decide on this?

Thanks+Greets,
Mike Gabriel

I'm a debian server and X2Go user.

I've installed a new debian Wheezy server, and X2Go server on it, and I
experiment the same problem as Mike.

Seems that the bug is still present.

Hey,

Could you please still reproduce this issue with newer gnome-session
version like 3.4.2.1-4 or 3.8.4-4 ?

thanks.
regards,
althaser

The problem still persists in Debian wheezy.

When I open a remote X2Go session, in windowed desktop mode, I can
resize the desktop session window but the GNOME3 session inside that
desktop session window does not resize its elements.

The problem now seems to be that the _NET_DESKTOP_GEOMETRY(CARDINAL) =
<width>, <height> does not get updated if the bearing NX/X-Server
screen resizes.

If I run a similar test with MATE as desktop shell, I can resize the
X2Go desktop session's window and all MATE desktop elements resize as
needed to fit the new desktop size. Whenever such a resize event
occurs, the _NET_DESKTOP_GEOMETRY(CARDINAL) = <width>, <height> gets
updated with the new windowed X2Go desktop session geometry.

The problem in Debian testing is different.

The NX/X11 code provides a very old GLX extension (v6 IIRC) which is
not recent enough for GNOMEv3 (>= 3.8 IMHO) to be usable inside an
X2Go session.

There are people that fiddle with setting up a GNOME3 session via
calling the GNOME desktops components individually via a script (so
omitting the actual gnome-session call on session startup), but that
is still very hacky not I consider that only as a work around for X2Go
and not recommendable.

Greets,
Mike

There have been many changes to Debian since this bug was originally
reported. If you are still experiencing this issue with Debian 13 (or
with Debian 12 or Testing or Unstable), please report a new bug.

Thank you,
Jeremy Bícha
