Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: libapache2-mod-php5
Version: 5.4.4-7
Severity: normal
I've installed FusionForge on a wheezy system (using rebuilt packages
from the 5.2 branch, FWIW), and I get crashes when mediawiki is used to
edit pages.
Apache's error log reports only :
[Wed Oct 24 11:35:31 2012] [notice] child pid 13403 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)
Appart from that, it's very hard to tell what's wrong.
Thanks in advance.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,

Why do you think they are similar ? One is a segfault and the other is a
recursion .

We can't really guess what is the problem without some hints.

The recursion in #694473 causes a stack overflow, which then leads to a
segfault, too. And both issues involve mediawiki. Therefore it seems
likely to me that they involve the same php functions and hit the same
problem.

Unfortunately, I can't :-(
I've tried producing core dumps, but cannot succeed.
I'm using mpm-prefork, and it seems that no cores will be produced for the child processes, although the master process (the one owned by root) dumps cores on signal 11 perfectly.
Maybe it's because the reproduction scenario involves an apache2 reload (yes, it seems very similar to #694473 : trying to post an edit to a wiki page after an /etc/init.d/apache2 reload has happened).
Are there any more instructions that what's in /usr/share/doc/apache2-mpm-prefork/README.backtrace on how to make sure apache's sub processes can dump cores ?
Thanks in advance.

FWIW, I think #691318 is probably a duplicate of #694473, as I can reproduce systematically a crash in an apache subprocess when editing a mediawiki page right after a reload.
However, I've been unable to produce core dumps (see my previous message to #691318) to confirm for sure.
In any case, thanks for the hint.

Strange, I can't remember having the same problem.
You could try setting /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable to 1. But this is a
security issue on a production server, read the proc man page to see
if it is acceptable.
Also, look into /etc/apache2 for coredumps, too. There is a short time
period during restart where the core dump directory will be set to the
compiled-in server root directory (I think this is a bug).

I had to use fs.suid_dumpable=2

Yes. The segfault happens before any of apache's core dump directory stuff is
processed.
I used kernel.core_pattern=/var/tmp/cores/%e.%p.%h.%t to make it easier to sort
out what cores are what.

Hi,
I have pulled Stephan's patch and the one from referenced bug. Could
you please confirm that this fixes the issue (5.4.4-12), and if not
would there be anyone willing to try php5 from experimental (5.4.11-1)
if that fixes the issue? (Probably not, but it's a worth trying.)

Message #68 received at 691318@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
There's a slight problem and that is I can't reproduce the problem
with 5.4.4-11 in amd64 wheezy chroot neither with mediawiki package
nor the vanilla mediawiki 1.20.2, so I cannot confirm if the 5.4.4-12
fixed the error or not.
Could one of the affected people please confirm? Unless you confirm
the bug is fixed, it cannot be propagated to wheezy, and I would
really much like to avoid releasing wheezy with a RC bug in PHP.

I've just tested posting a mediawiki edit on my fusionforge server
installed with 5.4.4-11 and could reproduce the problem right after an
/etc/init.d/apache2 reload.
Will now test 5.4.4-12 and report.

Thanks alot.
I've just tested with 5.4.4-12 from unstable, and it seems to fix the issue : I can now make edits in the mediawiki installed with fusionforge right after an /etc/init.d/apache2 reload without a segmentation fault :-)

FWIW, I won't test it : machine in production.
Hope this helps.
