Hi!

pdnsd does some horrible things in its maintainer scripts:

* prerm unconditionally removes the conffile /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/002_NetMan_pdnsd
(#689537) which is then reinstated out of the new package on upgrades.
The contents of the files in squeeze and wheezy are the same but this
obviously does not respect local admin changes.
* edits /etc/default/pdnsd which is a conffile in postinst.
* postinst does not respect maintainer changes to /etc/default/pdnsd

The package will require substantial changes to the maintainer scripts to
fix these problems and this is unlikely to be acceptable for wheezy.

The package is now orphaned and has been maintained by NMU for some time.

The package has no reverse-depends or reverse-recommends.

cheers
Stuart

Agreed, but that has only been reported a week ago.

RC-bug fixes are still acceptable, as stated in the first item of the
freeze policy.

> The package is now orphaned

… since last week, and someone already made some bug triaging after
that. Furthermore, the userbase is neither null nor decreasing.

I don't know how pdnsd compares with its alternatives nor how easy would
it be to switch to any of them (hopefully well maintained).

I've attached a patch for #689537 to the bug report.

Fixing #690368 (incorrect conffile + debconf handling) will be much more work --
the easiest way of fixing that would be to remove *all* debconf handling in
there and leave it to the admin to configure pdnsd by editing
/etc/default/pdnsd by hand. Given the time you have invested in translations
for the debconf questions, perhaps you'd rather not take that approach.

cheers
Stuart

With uploads fixing the RC-bugs in pdnsd, it only needs a new maintainer not a
new maintainer and lots of bug fixes. No reason to push for removal at this
stage.
