Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: php5-fpm
Version: 5.4.6-2
In php5-fpm, when using /etc/init.d/php5-fpm stop or
/etc/init.d/php5-fpm start, as well as when using the 'service
php5-fpm [command]' method similarly, does not report that the php
process was started or stopped. This makes server administration a tad
confusing. `pidof php5-fpm` shows it is running, but there's no
notification thereof that it was started or stopped (from the
start/stop script).
The 'restart' command does give output similar to this:
[orion]# service php5-fpm restart
* Restarting PHP5 FastCGI Process Manager php5-fpm
I'd expect similar messages for 'stop' and 'start' as well, saying
"Starting" or "Stopping" accordingly.

This also affects 5.3.10 and later, which is what Ubuntu Precise has
(this bug was seen there, and the init scripts have not changed
between 5.3.10 and 5.4.6-*, which exists in Ubuntu Quantal).

Message #15 received at 690091@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Thomas,
I checked out the init file and it will only display those messages if
$VERBOSE is not 'no'
$VERBOSE is set in /lib/init/vars.sh , on most systems it will be
'VERBOSE=no' on line 12
So if you edit this file and check that to verbose=yes you will see
messages (Other things will be verbose on your system
also though)
With that being said it seems that messages by design are not going to
STDOUT, personally I agree with you, but this
is probably more of a feature request than a bug.

Version: 5.4.6-2
I see no bug here. The init script was crafted according our
/etc/init.d/skeleton which contains this template:
[...]
case "$1" in
start)
[ "$VERBOSE" != no ] && log_daemon_msg "Starting $DESC" "$NAME"
do_start
case "$?" in
0|1) [ "$VERBOSE" != no ] && log_end_msg 0 ;;
2) [ "$VERBOSE" != no ] && log_end_msg 1 ;;
esac
;;
stop)
[ "$VERBOSE" != no ] && log_daemon_msg "Stopping $DESC" "$NAME"
do_stop
case "$?" in
0|1) [ "$VERBOSE" != no ] && log_end_msg 0 ;;
2) [ "$VERBOSE" != no ] && log_end_msg 1 ;;
esac
;;
[...]
Closing the bug.
O.
