Subject: nvidia-glx: broken on GeForce 8300 GS
Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2012 15:48:40 -0400
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 302.17-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

The nvidia binary driver seems to have serious issues on a GeForce 8300
GS video card. It fails without any clue as to why. 2D rendering is
terrible and incredibly sluggish as a result. It also takes several
minutes to load desktop environment (XFCE) after login screen (lightdm).

I just upgraded to wheezy from squeeze. The nvidia blob I was using in
squeeze correctly worked with my video card. Furthermore, nouveau seems
to work much better. It provides good 2D rendering at least.

First boot after installing the nvidia binary driver I saw several
disconcerting error messages in Xorg.log. But after successive boots,
they no longer show up (I have attached old Xorg.log).

I decided to try version 304.37 from unstable. That was even worse. It
wouldn't load the desktop environment at all (after login), but would
stall for a minute or so and then kick me back to the lightdm login
screen without any explanation in the logs!

If there's any information you need, let me know. I'm afraid this report
is not very useful given the puzzling nature of the problem. I guess I
can try the upstream installer which is a minor version ahead of Debian.

I've seen another report on the matter here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=177566

The driver appears to have been broken for this hardware for quite sometime.

Best

Andres

Some additional info:

I tried the binary 304.43 driver from nvidia. I got the exact same
result as with the 304.37 version in Debian. I've attached the xorg
log file and also the installer's log.
The installer did warn me against using a different version of gcc
(4.7.1) than the one used to compile my kernel (4.6.3). I ignored it.
I seriously doubt this issue could be causing such major breakage. I
suppose I'll try at some point to try a newer kernel or compile one
myself.

I've found another report of the same issue on same generation video
cards from NVIDIA:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=141416

At this point I guess I'll try to see how to submit this issue
upstream (where should I go?). Any advice on the matter is welcome

Best

As a follow-up on my initial bug report, I'm attaching the
nvidia-bug-report as generated by the nvidia-bug-report.sh script.
This was done using the driver version 302.17 as packaged in Debian
testing branch.

Did you check the nvidia forum whether anyone has reported a similar

Just tested version 304.48 of the nvidia binary drivers and the
problem is still present. I've attached the nvidia-bug-report.

Of course I checked the forum. I found an oldish post about it. I
added a reply, but no one has provided any solutions. I've also found
reports from the Arch linux forums. I'm puzzled by this question,
since you forwarded this debian bug report to precisely the thread in
the NVIDIA forums dealing with this issue.

No response so far from NVIDIA either...

Hi Andres,

Thanks for the bug report; I'll try to locate a G86-based 8300GS and see
if I can get this to happen on my end.

Thanks,

I have just tested both versions. The problem remains, except that
with the beta driver 310.14, my system froze after the lightdm login
screen and I couldn't even switch VT.

The logs for 310.14 seem a bit more verbose. I'm attaching the logs

I have just tested both newer versions of nvidia graphics driver. The
problem remains. With 313.26 system freezes at lightdm longin screen
and cannot switch VT.
Now with 304.84 switching VT causes the monitor to simply turn off as
(Debian Bug #703313).

I have just tested a newer versions of nvidia graphics driver. The
problem remains. With 319.82 system freezes temporarily after a
successful lightdm login and then kicks me out to login screen again.
Switching VT works but after a few seconds of a hard-freeze (mouse doesn't move)

dmesg and Xorg server logs attached, but once again, they are not helpful

I can't help but think that nvidia has forsaken linux users of these
two old video cards, since there has been no report whatsoever on the
status of this bug. I suppose I will try version 331.xx in due time,
but I suspect it will just be a waste of my time..
