Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2012 14:36:20 +0200
Package: nautilus
Version: 3.4.2-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

it is about two months I am experiencing this bug. Nautilus will
create icons in ~/.thumbnails/normal by invoking the correct
thumbnailer. I can open eog and browse them, so they are correct. The
md5 sum is also correct. For instance:

filename=$(echo -n "file:///home/matteo/Immagini/avatar.jpg" | md5sum | cut -d ' ' -f 1)
[ -f "$HOME/.thumbnails/normal/${filename}.png" ] && echo "It exists."

Prints: It exists.

I have tried also with videos (which use totem-video-thumbnailer as
specified in /usr/share/thumbnailers) and PDFs, and it also produces
the correct thumbnails in ~/.thumbnails/normal.

My ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory directory does not even
exist, but even if I create it, it does not solve the issue.

Running

strace nautilus 2>&1 | grep open

shows me these trailing lines:

open("/proc/mounts", O_RDONLY) = 32
open("/home/matteo/.local/share/thumbnailers", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_DIRECTORY|O_CLOEXEC) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

And the last lines get repeated on and on and on again, until nautilus
is killed. While it is responsive (I can browse folders and open files
allright), no thumbnail is ever shown.

Also, grepping for "access" instead of "open" in strace, shows me that
the thumbnailers get continously invoked over the same files over and
over again. This should account for the high CPU usage.

I guess there is something wrong with the code trying the "fail" icon
before the correctly generated one, or never trying to access the icon
in ~/.thumbnails/normal afterwards (I am not sure about the intended
order).

I cannot reproduce this on Fedora 17, so it might be my configuration
on this Debian box, or either some specific Debian patch misbehaving.

Cheers,
Matteo

Dear Maintainer,

I recently moved from mate to cinnamon, and hit exactly the same bug. Thumbnails
were rightfully created in ~/.thumbnails/normal, but gnome was trying to fetch
them from ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory.

I found a solution here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1188134#p1188134

A simple ln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails did the trick.

I think it is still a bug, because a new user with an empty home on the same
machine triggers the same bug.

I’m not following you. GNOME 3.4 as a whole still uses ~/.thumbnails as
the thumbnail cache directory, not the new location.

Which component is actually trying to use this new location?

I tried both nautilus and nemo.

Before the symlink, I witnessed the exact same behaviour as Matteo in the first report (opening ~/.thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/, ENOENT), in both explorers.

After the symlink, stracing both nautilus and nemo shows successful opens of ~/.cache/thumbnails/normal/*.

I can help debugging this if you give me pointers.

Regards,

You must have some components of GNOME 3.6 to exhibit this behavior.
Nautilus 3.4 only uses ~/.thumbnails.

I don’t know about nemo, but if it is not kept in sync with gvfs, it’s
looking for trouble.

Nemo is nautilus' clone by the cinnamon project. Packages have been submitted
to unstable recently. I have installed both gnome 3.4 and cinnamon 1.6.7. I
checked, I don't have a single gnome 3.6 package.

I logged in using a brand new user in a gnome classic session, I launched
nautilus 3.4.2 with strace, and observed it trying to fetch thumbnails from
~/.cache/thumbnails, and creating them to ~/.thumbnails/normal.
~/.cache/thumbnails doesn't even exist.

Could some package from cinnamon change or overwrite some gnome configuration
parameter?

What exactly does that mean? Was that a complete, fresh installation of
Debian, did you keep your /home directory.
Or when you are speaking of mate, do you mean the unofficial,
unsupported 3rd party repository that is available for Debian.

If you are installing Debian GNOME wheezy from scratch, can you still
reproduce the problem?

Michael

Same problem here.

This is a sid gnome only desktop without any gnome related fork (and I
never have installed one)
I think it started about one or two weeks ago.

Could you strace the nautilus process which is going amok and see what
files it is trying to open?

strace attached.

Just checked, and I have libc, glib and the kernel from experimental.
apt-get/aptitude wont downgrade glib without removing everything..
The symlink worked for me, so if glib could be a problem, feel free to
ignore me.

Indeed it is a known problem with glib from experimental.

We will add a snippet at session startup to add such a symlink after the
release, before the new glib reaches unstable.
