Hi,

You're right, there are already a lot of X11 window managers in Debian ...

But WMFS is not already in the list and it works fine, that's why I want to package it :-)

PS: i've uploaded a package here: http://mentors.debian.net/package/wmfs

That is no reason for it to be in Debian.

Debian is not a dumping ground for every piece of free software just
because it "works fine".

Do the hard work of objectively identifying *all* of the pros and cons
of *all* the existing equivalents inside Debian already, compare those
with the pros and cons of yours and if there's any time left before
the heat death of the universe, maybe it can be considered.

> PS: i've uploaded a package here: http://mentors.debian.net/package/wmfs

That is no reason for it to be uploaded either.

There is no good reason for any new window managers in Debian. There
are good reasons to look at removing at least 10% of the ones which are
in Debian.

Doing that comparative analysis would be a good start for identifying
which can be removed - now *that* would be doing something useful for
Debian. This bug is *not* useful to anyone. Please close it and find an
RC bug to close instead.

I'm pretty sure this could be expressed in another tone. Especially
since we welcome everyone (you know) and we have _no_ written rule what
belongs into Debian and what not, and nobody who decides on that beyond
legal issues.

How would Mickaël know, then?

I think the list is incomplete. For example, awesome is not in it but is
properly tagged.

A window manager is something highly personal (like an editor). You put
a lot of effort to configure it and to get used to it. If Debian didn't
had my favorite window manager, I would be quite unhappy to have to
learn one which was here before. Plus, I would need to rewamp my whole
configuration.

Hi Mickaël,

If you still need a sponsor: I'm curious on that window manager. The
feature description by Serge sounded promising and the screenshots on
the website look neat, too.

I'm currently using awesome and ratpoison -- and packaging a
non-tiling window manager myself which I prefer when a tiling doesn't
do the job (think Gimp). While awesome and ratpoison are fine for my
daily work they still have their usability itches (a few of them were
already mentioned by Serge -- awesome's configuration in Lua is one of
them). I also tried i3 and scrotwm for a while, and looked at subtle
and herbstluftwm (despite their concepts are too far away from what I
look for).

I tried to look at
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/wmfs/wmfs_2~beta201206-3.dsc
and
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/wmfs/wmfs_2~beta201206-3.dsc
but those upload seems incomplete:

dpkg-source: error: File ./wmfs_2~beta201206.orig.tar.xz has size 53492 instead of expected 296604
dpkg-source: error: File ./wmfs_2~beta201206.orig.tar.xz has size 53492 instead of expected 53512

As the mentors site seem to have been able to run lintian on the
package, I suspect this could be an issue on mentors.debian.net. I'll
try from another box later to see if I have the same issues there.

The newest one which seemed complete was
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/wmfs/wmfs_2\~beta201206.dsc

Since alone from what I see on the mentors site the newer packages are
quite improved over that one, I'd prefer to have a look at the current
state instead of this out-dated version.

Yes, i'm still looking for a sponsor :-)
I will add more informations to the ITP bug soon.

Yeah, Gimp (<= 2.6) is a problem with almost every tiling window manager
I had the same problem, that's why i switched to Gimp 2.7.

I never tryed Ratpoison, but i used Awesome for a while, and i ended
up with a 800 lines long rc.lua.
I'm not a big fan of Lua :-p
I tryed i3 too, but i don't like the "tree structure", so finally i
tryed WMFS and i use it since a little more than a year. That's why i
had the idea to package it.

In fact, the `debian' folder i created for the package is now in the
WMFS git repository, so when i want to build it, i create a
.orig.tar.xz file with the following command:

     tar --xz -cvf ../wmfs2~beta201206.orig.tar.xz --exclude=debian

... and then i build the package with `debuild' and i upload it with `dput'.

So i think i forgotten to run `make clean' before archiving and there
is probably some binaries inside, which whould explain the error
message :-/

If you want to try WMFS, you can still use the source:

    git clone git://github.com/xorg62/wmfs.git
    cd wmfs && debian/rules binary-all

As i said in the previous message, i'm currently at work and i go back
home only Friday evening, so i can't fix the problem with the orig
file till then...

Apart from that, i am wondering if it's better to call the package
`wmfs' with the version number `2~beta<date>', as i did, or if i
should rather call it `wmfs2' with version number `<date>', as WMFS
was been completely rewritten since the version 1 ...

Have a nice day.

Haven't tried Gimp in a while and Squeeze has 2.6.

It's basically the same keybindings as with GNU Screen on the console,
just for X and with Ctrl-T instead of Ctrl-A by default (and no detach
feature :-) -- so if you know Screen, you can immediately use it and
be productive. Which IMHO is quite an impressive feature in the tiling
window manager world.

1800 lines here... :-/

JFTR: I get the same issue on some other box.

Should do it. IIRC with source format 3.0, for non-native packages,
dpkg-source ignores any debian directory which is in the .orig tarball.

That would explain different expected size above.

Is it possible that you tried to fix this by manually uploading a
"corrected" wmfs_2~beta201206.orig.tar.xz after having used dput? That
would at least explain the problems above. (I though would have
expected that mentors catches such cases in some way.)

Will do. But probably won't dig too much into it before the freeze.

No stress. I'm quite busy currently, too.

As long as you don't want to have both versions installed in parallel
via package, I'd prefer just "wmfs" as package name and the "2" into
the version.

+1 (says the guy building UDE from source)

As someone pointed out earlier, there are lots of different tastes when it
comes to window manager-like software... I expect there are more tastes than
available WMs--so, the more the merrier as long as its maintained.

Hi,

I've re-uploaded the package:

    http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/wmfs/wmfs_2~beta201206-3.dsc

Now it should works.

Hi Mickaël,

Mickaël Raybaud-Roig wrote:

I've just built and installed the package and then tried to use it via
ratpoison's "tmpwm" command.

wmfs argues there's no configuration file. If I touch it, it argues
that it's empty. If I put a comment in it, wmfs just says "parsing
failed" but not why (except a few stray "Resource temporarily
unavailable" messages of which I have no idea what they refer to).

There seems to be neither a default config which is used when no
per-user configuration is present nor seem there example
configurations in /usr/share/doc/wmfs/examples/ or such.

I recommend to offer both, default and example configurations for a
good first user impression and strongly recommend to have at least one
of them.

Hi,

A long time ago, you expressed interest in packaging wmfs. Unfortunately,
it seems that it did not happen. In Debian, we try not to keep ITP bugs open
for a too long time, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to
refrain from packaging the software.

This is an automatic email to change the status of wmfs back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 12 months.

If you are still interested in packaging wmfs, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 678815 ITP: wmfs -- Window Manager From Scratch

 thanks

It is also a good idea to document your progress on this ITP from time to
time, by mailing <678815@bugs.debian.org>. If you need guidance on how to
package this software, please reply to this email, and/or contact the
debian-mentors@lists.debian.org mailing list.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,
