Hi!
Is this issue still valid? Do you have the most recent version of
PackageKit (avaiable in the Debian archives) installed?
This issue should not happen (and I wasn't able to reproduce it here,
so it is probably already gone...)
Cheers,
Matthias

Hi, well I am unable to reproduce it on the machine i am using now.
This is the same version as used before (3.4.2-1), but it looks like
the bug is gone.
Anyway I think it is safe to close this ticket. If I am able to
reproduce this bug later, i'll reopen it.
Thanks for your time!

Message #22 received at 678340@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
This bug is still happening. If you start gpk-update-viewer and check
for updates, it will most likely not find any update and will say your
system is up to date. But if you use apt-get to update the repositories
status and start gpk-update-viewer again, it will show the available
updates and let you install them.
It is probably not downloading the files from repositories to check for
the status of updated packages, but will use the ones downloaded by
apt-get and will work fine.
Sometimes it will work but will leave some packages not updating, I am
not very sure about that. I reproduced this in a virtual machine running
on another computer and gpk-update-viewer is having this same incorrect
behaviour, it may update some packages but if I run apt-get update it
will show a lot of other updates that it was not able to find by itself.
Maybe this bug is being overlooked by the majority of users because they
are proficient at using the shell for system updates?

Hi!
This is very weird... Can you please if you reproduced this, update
your package cache by running "pkcon refresh" instead of "apt-get
update" in a terminal? Do you get any error message from pkcon? Is the
list updated after running the command?
Can you check the PackageKit proxy settings (if you have one) in the
GPK preferences?
If all of this does not work or produce some nice error message, please run
"/usr/lib/packagekit/packagekitd --verbose" in a Terminal as root,
execute "pkcon refresh" in a new one and send me the output from
packagekitd.
If you already have a VM with this stuff running, you might want to
upgrade PackageKit and GNOME-PackageKit to their newest versions using
the packages available in Debian Eperimental.
Does that solve the issue?
Cheers & a happy new year!
Matthias

Package: gnome-packagekit
Version: 3.4.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #678340
Hi,
I have this issue in testing.
When I run "pkcon refresh" the package cache is refreshed and the gpk-update-
viewer shows all the available updates.
So "pkcon refresh" is fine but is probably never used.
Best Regards,
Andrzej

I agree, you can see it in the logs. Debian's gnome runs 'get-updates'
but never 'refresh':

Whereas Fedora runs PackageKit refresh as intended:

The component which runs the refresh-action on GNOME is not
GNOME-PackageKit, but gnome-settings-daemon.
Can you check in gpk-prefs that the automatic update-checks are enabled?
All people not using GNOME or KDE need to ask their desktops to
integrate PackageKit, or install the package "apt-config-auto-update"
to get the cache updated.

Right, I forgot that this was dropped from gpk-prefs.
Please open the dconf-editor (GUI editor for dconf) and navigate to the
/org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/updates section.
Is the "active" value set to "true"?

Ful disclosure - I said this was a clean test VM. The one quirk is I
migrated it from gnome Boxes to virt-manager, had to futz NetworkManager,
and then added a second network interface.
However I can't see any problems when I try
- `nm-online && echo online`
- installing packages from repos
- web browsing

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 3.14.2-3
Followup-For: Bug #678340
I turned on the debug flag in gnome-settings-daemon to see why the
package cache is never refreshed automatically on my computer. There
was a message "not when session active" in the debug output. The
package cache is refreshed only when the computer is idle. The daemon
obtains information about idle status by handling a signal
"StatusChanged" from org.gnome.SessionManager. However, this signal is
emitted by org.gnome.SessionManager.Presence, so the daemon never
receives it.
There is no handler for signals from
org.gnome.SessionManager.Presence, so the simplest solution is to just
disable the check for the idle status. The package cache will be
refreshed even if the user is not idle, but it's better than no
refresh at all. A patch is attached.

I can confirm that this bug was fixed for me by installing
apt-config-auto-update (I am on Xfce).
The gnome-packagekit package should probably depend on/recommend
gnome-settings-daemon |apt-config-auto-update so that it works
out-of-the-box.
