Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the s3cmd package (I do not use S3 anymore).

The package description is:
Command-line tool to upload, retrieve and manage data in Amazon S3 service
(http://www.amazon.com/s3/), designed for use in scripts. Features:
  - creating and destroying S3 buckets
  - uploading and downloading files
  - listing remote files
  - removing remote files
  - synchronizing local directories to S3 buckets
  - getting various information about buckets and disk usage
 .
s3cmd supports both (US and EU) S3 datacentres.

Much appreciated. I have a bit of a ramp up before me in regards to
creating debian packages and python development. I could use help with
open bugs / making patches as well as verifying the future packages I
create.

Is there any activity on adoption of s3cmd? I am also willing to adopt
it. I use s3cmd both at home and at work, so while my debian time is
pretty limited overall, I could justify using some work time to help
maintain this. I'm already a full debian developer and I already have
another package that uses python plus some python programming experience
under my belt (even though it is not my primary language), so I could
probably pick this up quickly.

I don't want to steal this from anyone else, but if no one objects or
the effort is otherwise stalled, I can just pick it up.

Hi Jay,

I have an upload of the latest version over at mentors. That's because
I don't have permission to commit to the svn repository for debian/*
as a new maintainer.
See: http://mentors.debian.net/package/s3cmd

There's an RFS bug open as well:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=714292

Jakub Wilk from QA team reviewed and gave me feedback on first upload.
I've corrected and patched based on his findings and re-uploaded.

Would you be interested in reviewing and sponsoring?

Robinson

Sure, I'd be glad to do that. It will probably be sometime next week at
the earliest before I can get to it. I won't be offended if someone
beats me to it (of course), but I will try to squeeze it in as soon as I
can.

Well, I'm really embarrassed that five months have passed since this
discussion. I had checked a while ago to find that s3cmd was not on
mentors.debian.net anymore and that the status of this bug report was
unchanged. Now there's a beta release of 1.5.0 that should be packaged.
Are you still interested? If you're interested in sponsorship, I can
try to be more responsive, or I can adopt the package. Looks like
upstream is pretty quiet.

No worries we all have family and or other commitments so I understand. I
also noticed the beta release when i got a notification about my upstream
fork pull request getting merged into main. This may drop the need for one
of the Debian patches. Because this is a simpler python tool and upstream
is usually quiet I figure this is good way to get into Debian maintenance.
I would still like to work on this. I will put together a beta and ask you
again about sponsoring. Thanks for your time.

I would much rather sponsor than take over, so this sounds perfect. I
agree that this is a good entry into debian maintenance. It should be a
pretty simple package to stay on top of. Of course feel free to use
mentors.debian.net, but also please contact me directly to request
sponsorship, and if you don't get a timely response, feel free to
nag. :-) It shouldn't take much of my time to get this going for you. I
will be away from my email during the week that contains new years day,
but otherwise I should be pretty responsive.

Could you maintain this in the python apps team, since other there would be
willing to occasionally help, plus it makes finding a sponsor easier.
