Hi,

Xfce 4.10 is around the corner, and like last time, we have some changes
in the panel which break the plugins built against the previous (4.8)
panel.

Like last time, we'd like to push a new 4.8 xfce4-panel with shlibs
like:

libxfce4panel-1.0 3 xfce4-panel (>= 4.7.7), xfce4-panel (<< 4.9)

then make a round of binNMUs for dependencies. So when it's time to
upload 4.10, we can safely upload in stable a 4.10 panel with shlibs:

libxfce4panel-1.0 4 xfce4-panel (>= 4.9.2)

or even

libxfce4panel-1.0 4 xfce4-panel (>= 4.9.2), xfce4-panel (<< 4.11)

and ask for a second round of binNMUs.

Since there are quite some plugins, I didn't yet upload the 4.8.6-4
xfce4-panel including the shlibs change, in case you'd like more info on
the whole transition. Ping me if/when I can upload.

Regards,

So, err, why isn't libxfce4panel a separate package that could change
names (along with a SONAME bump) when the interface changes? And why
was the xfce4-panel (<< 4.9) bit not there in the first place if you
know every release is incompatible?

We thought about this, we even though about this in the 4.6/4.8
transition. Unfortunately, it might not be a good idea, because even if
you split the lib and keep the old lib around when upgrading the panel
and adding a new lib, the plugins built against the old panel might
still not work with the new panel.

Well, we don't know that in advance. We could force the conflict by
default and remove it if/when we know that the next panel won't have
issues with old plugins though, but that means “transition by default”
which you might not like either. If you prefer that default, then I'm ok
to make the switch

This is just a friendly ping about #668806. I think it's safe to say
that we won't squeeze Xfce 4.10 in Wheezy, but at least paving the way
for Wheezy+1 upgrades would be better.

as discussed on IRC, I think having “traditional” transitions would be
the easiest for everyone, we have tools to handle them. Worst case, you
don't actually need to bump the soname for one release; then you just
don't bump it, and done. I don't see any drawback with this approach.

And thanks for the friendly ping.

Ok, since it seems things are a bit unclear, we can't really use the
traditional (soname) way because we would need to split the binary and
the lib and then we might have:

xfce4-foo-plugin built against libxfce4panel.so.1 (Xfce 4.6)
xfce4-bar-plugin built against libxfce4panel-1.0.so.3 (Xfce 4.8)

with both lib packages installed. But we can only have one binary
xfce4-package installed (4.8), and at runtime, xfce4-foo-plugin won't
load in xfce4-panel 4.8.

So we do need to have stricter dependencies than soname here.

After a bit more thinking, we may have a way to split libxfce4panel in
Wheezy+1.

Basically, we would have

xfce4-panel (linked against and depending on libxfce4panel-1.0-6)
xfce4-foo-plugin (linked against and depending on libxfce4panel-1.0-6,
and depending on xfce4-panel)

If a new xfce4-panel is released (with, say, libxfce4panel-1.0-7) which
breaks plugins built against libxfce4panel-1.0-6 we could ship a shlib
file with:

Breaks: libxfce4panel-1.0-6

so xfce4-panel would only be installed with the previous library
removed, so at least users would have the choice not to install it until
it's ready. Then, depending on the context, we would ask for binNMUs or
do the required porting.

I need to think a bit more about that, but in any case this will only
happen in experimental, since right now I'm a bit more thinking about
Wheezy.

So, this is another friendly ping about the main issue. Can I upload a
new 4.6 xfce4-panel which adds the Conflicts against xfce4-panel 4.8 in
shlibs. Then RT would need to schedule the binNMUs for all the relevant
dependencies so, when Wheezy/Wheezy+1 upgrade time comes, a plugin not
working with with 4.10+ panel has a chance to be upgraded *before* the
new panel is used?

Hi RT,

I know you're all quite busy, but that won't get better as freeze comes
closer. Right now, we won't have an upgrade path for xfce4-panel and
plugins between Wheezy and Wheezy+1: for partial upgrades there's a
window where panel might already be updated to 4.10+ while plugins are
still at 4.8, and it'll break at runtime unless we force (4.8) plugins
to be upgraded at the same time as the (4.8) panel.

If it's a bit painful to schedule the binNMUs I can do the xfce4-panel
upload and then do a sourceful upload of each and every panel plugin but
that looks too much like an uncoordinated transition and that doesn't
look desirable.

Maybe the change is small enough that it could be done post-freeze along
with all the binNMUs, but then I wouldn't be against some kind of
confirmation of that.

So, TL;DR: what can I do to help, and could I have a small bit of update
so I have an idea what to do for the upgrade path?

Following an ACK from Julien on IRC, I've made an upload for xfce4-panel
with the following debdiff:

(sorry, the --parallel was present at that time, I didn't bother to
change it). I think binNMUs can be scheduled, then I'll transform this
bug into an unblock request (but I'll do that at the end of the 10 days
period anyway, there's no rush).

Is there something preventing the binNMUs to be scheduled? There's no
rush since they won't migrate anyway and maybe you want to spend time on
more important post-freeze issue, but I'd appreciate a comment from the
RT :)

Yes, xfce4-panel is not built on mips.
