Package: network-manager-openvpn
Version: 0.9.4.0-1
I thought i copy this bug over here, because its already quite old and
still not fixed.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-openvpn/+bug/280160
I can confirm the same behavior in debian squeeze and wheezy.
at least there is an workaround avaliable.
There is an Openvpn ticket too:
https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/ticket/93
but not much progress there ether.
greetings

Actually, I misread the workaround. It should still work. Just better to
use dpkg-divert than mv.

This bug still exists, and is annoying. Even more now that
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-openvpn-service-openvpn-helper is an
executable instead of a script, which makes the workaround not work.

Package: network-manager-openvpn
Version: 1.2.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #667611
I think the root cause of this issue may have changed over time, given the
activity on the upstream openvpn bug report, but the fact that it still
fails.
I see this locally with this error in the logs:
May 9 09:18:49 bengal nm-openvpn[20895]: Preserving previous TUN/TAP instance: tap0
May 9 09:18:49 bengal nm-openvpn[20895]: /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-openvpn-service-openvpn-helper --bus-name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.openvpn.Connection_53 --tap -- tap0 1500 1574 10.0.0.175 255.255.255.0 restart
May 9 09:18:49 bengal nm-openvpn[20895]: WARNING: Failed running command (--up/--down): could not execute external program
May 9 09:18:49 bengal nm-openvpn[20895]: Exiting due to fatal error
I think the problem now is that you can't use --up-restart with --chroot,
unless the --up script is also present at the same path in the chroot.
PS: #567153 is probably a duplicate of this issue.

Workaround used according to Christian's suggestion about chroot not
holding the --up script : mv /var/lib/openvpn/chroot /var/lib/openvpn/chroot.disabled
thus preventing chrooting.
