[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64
Version: 2.6.32-41
Tried to install Debian Squeeze on a new Dell R620 platform. The system could NOT bring up the RAID Array. Could not get the error output ..but it was trying to use the megaraid driver.
I was able to get this to work properly with Wheezy Standard kernel. I am guessing a packport of megaraid is needed.
I have a working wheezy installation so I can give you any type of diagnostic information needed.
Thanks

That's no good. Thanks for reporting it.

Great, let's start with that. Please attach output from
"reportbug --template linux-image-$(uname -r)" on the working
installation.
Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Thanks. Can you get the error message from squeeze, using
netconsole[1], a serial console[2], or a photograph of the screen?

Sure. Can you get output from the following commands?
ls -l /dev/sd*
cat /proc/modules
dmesg | grep mega

I have attached the complete dmesg output and content of the /proc/modules file
NOTE: I had to mount a thumbdrive after I ran these commands so I could copy my output onto a thumbdrive ..so you might see in the dmesg output it attached the thumbdrive to /dev/sda.

So the easiest way for me to do this was to take a pic of the screen. I have attached the jpg of the console..
This is a wheezy OS install running a squeeze kernel (2.6.32-41)..It tries to boot up but cannot find a disk and drops me into the (initramfs) shell. I am still at the shell so if you need any additional information, just ask.
On another note, I was able to get a squeeze-backport kernel 2.6.38 kernel to run on this system (it seems to be using a later revision of the megaraid driver)..but I prefer to use the 2.6.32 Squeeze kernel.

Jonathon,
So far everything is looking good..We do NOT run a stock config so I have recompiled the kernel with our specific config and will run LTP testing on the system to determine if their are any more issues.

Thanks. Support for this controller was added during the 2.6.38-rc1
merge window (commit 9c915a8c99bc, "[SCSI] megaraid_sas: Add 9565/9285
specific code", 2010-12-21).
Could you try the attached patch series against the squeeze kernel?
Instructions are at [1], and if you have any questions, please don't
hesitate to ask.
Hope that helps,

Thanks again. How did it go?
(Ben, if it worked well for them then I think we should take these
patches in s-p-u right after the next point release and see if anyone
screams. Or sooner, if we can get someone at Dell or LSI to look over
the list of patches or can get confidence some other way, like
comparing to what Red Hat uses.)
Curious,
Jonathan

Yes, agree we should apply these. Unfortunately it's now too late to
get these into Debian 6.0.5.

Hi Gurus,
My customer just bought a PowerEdge R620 with H710, and their OS is Debian 6.0. they failed to install Debian 6.0 on R620. I searched Debian bugs, and found this bug was fixed. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=666108
I have poor linux skill, having difficulty to understand the discussions. Could you please give me an easy instruction on how to install debian 6.0 on R620 with PERC710?

First, thanks very much for writing. Let's get this fixed. :)
As for your question, the short answer is: I don't know. I can
provide an updated kernel to test (and would be very interested in the
result), but I do not know how to tell the Debian installer to use it.

I'll build one. Is the customer using the 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit
(amd64) version of the OS?
Here are instructions for building a patched kernel on the same kind
of Debian system, from a directory containing the twelve patches
from [1] and nothing else:
0. Prerequisites. As root:
apt-get install build-essential fakeroot
apt-get install devscripts
1. Get the source.
apt-get source linux-2.6=2.6.32-45
cd linux-2.6-2.6.32
2. Patch and build.
bash debian/bin/test-patches $(ls ../*.patch)
This should produce a .deb file containing the patched kernel.
As a sanity check:
3. Install and test. As root:
dpkg -i ../<name of package>
reboot
These instructions were taken from [2].
Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Here it is:

Completely untested, since I don't have a 64-bit machine handy at the
moment. I would be interested in hearing how it behaves on a variety
of machines and RAID setups if possible. I'll also contact LSI to see
if they have any advice about tests to run or additional patches to
apply.

Hi,
I am working on improving support for newer megaraid controllers in
Debian squeeze's 2.6.32.y-based kernel.
On top of what's in 2.6.32.y, Debian squeeze currently has the
following patches applied:
c35188377f12 Add poll mechanism to megaraid sas driver
72c4fd36dc7f add sysfs for AEN polling
879111224d07 Add new megaraid SAS 2 controller support to the driver

0c79e681eef1 Fix the fix for fw hang caused by megaraid sas application
When Buford Peek needed support for a Dell PERC H710P I provided him
with the following as a quick set of patches to test:
81e403ce3c6a infrastructure to get PDs from FW
7e8a75f4dfbf Add the support for updating the OS after adding/removing
the devices from FW
bdc6fb8d69fa add the logical drive list to driver

cd50ba8ede5c Add struct megasas_instance_template changes
9c915a8c99bc Add 9565/9285 specific code
The result seemed to work ok. :) But it left out at least one
important fix:
f575c5d3ebdc Fix instance access in megasas_reset_timer

Questions:
1) Are any of these important fixes that should be applied to 2.6.32.y
so everyone who uses a 2.6.32-based kernel can start benefitting
from them?
2) Are there any important fixes to megaraid SAS 2 support which we
should apply right away to Debian squeeze?
3) Is the list of patches I sent to Buford Peek for LSI Fusion support
missing any dependencies or follow-up fixes?
4) Which patches do you recommend applying to support even more
hardware more robustly?
5) Would you be willing to test a 2.6.32.y-based kernel with your
suggested set of patches? That would be very useful to us.
There is a basic kernel for testing available at
http://alioth.debian.org/~jrnieder-guest/temp/driver-test/ to get the
process started.
Thanks for maintaining the megaraid driver well, and hope that helps.
Sincerely,
Jonathan

Sorry for Not getting back with you on this issue earlier..I have been crazy busy at work.
that being said, here are my findings..
First the patch worked with out issue and was able to spin the drives with no problem. We were being effected by a weird kernel panic (see bug 666442)..I was able to fix that by using a different kernel config. I will explain in more detail in bug 666442.
So I took the latest Debian linux image 2.6.32-45 applied your patch used our NEW kernel config and everything seemed to work great..it went through our initial revs of LTP testing and there were some minor issues mainly on our OS side but other than that, it works great.
We have greatly improved our performance using the new RAID cards, and the driver worked great and without issue
I was a little bummed to see that patch was not applied in 2.6.32-45 but I should have replied earlier..I would recommend to role this patch into 2.6.32-46 or what ever revision 2.6.32 development is on.

Friendly ping. Did you end up learning anything from testing?

No reply. Is this the right address to reach the megaraid_sas
maintainers? Would you be interested in making sure the
2.6.32.y-based kernels used by various Linux distributors have
up-to-date hardware support and fixes? What can I do to help make
that happen?
Thanks,
Jonathan

If you have already backported the patches from list 2 to Debian
2.6.32.x kernel, please also backport the patches from list 3.

Debian's squeeze kernel currently only has the five patches marked [1].
The patches marked [2] have been backported and tested but not applied
(waiting on advice from knowledgeable folks such as you :)).
If someone makes a backport of the patches marked [3] as well, would
you be able to look over or test the combination? That would be much
appreciated. If that's not possible, your advice would still be
welcome but we will need to use a more minimal set of changes.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Yes, I will be able to look over and/or test the combination. If you
apply all patches then diff vs. the scsi-misc tip, you should only see
kernel 2.6.32.y specific changes.

Sorry for the long delay.
I've made a backport with all relevant patches I could find from the
3.0.y tree and put the patches and a built package at
http://alioth.debian.org/~jrnieder-guest/temp/driver-test/
Patches are against 2.6.32.y. The most notable missing patch is the
BKL conversion --- for Debian squeeze it seems safest to just keep
using the BKL. I'd be happy for any thoughts you have.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Gentle ping. LSI folks, would it make sense for Debian to apply this
series to their 2.6.32.y-based kernel? Would some other format (a git
tree instead of the current "git am"-ready patch series) be easier to
review?
Thanks for your kindness,
Jonathan

Message #218 received at 666108@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Hello,
we got some "LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 9240 (rev 03) / Dell PERC H310 Mini Monolithics" RAID-Controllers. Until Firmware Version 20.10.1-0084 there were running nice with linux-image-2.6.32-5-openvz-amd64 version 2.6.32-46. FW-Version 20.11.0-0002 only works with kerne-package version 2.6.32-47.
Thanks for this update.
