Subject: kernel-package no longer supports armel architecture
Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2012 12:28:26 +0100
Package: kernel-package
Version: 12.036+nmu2
Severity: important

make-kpkg no longer recognizes "armel" as a valid parameter to the
--arch switch: passing it causes the following error when trying to do
anything:

debian/ruleset/misc/checks.mk:36: *** Error. I do not know where the kernel image goes to [kimagedest undefined] The usual case for this is that I could not determine which arch or subarch this machine belongs to. Please specify a subarch, and try again.. Stop.

This is due to the following part of the changelog:

> - Merge armel.mk into arm.mk

But armel.mk was not "merged" into anything, it was purely removed,
along with its functionality! There is not mention of armel anywhere
inside arm.mk.

(Using --arch arm does not work either, since it produces a .deb with
"arm" rather than "armel" architecture.)

[Rationale for marking severity as "important": this bug makes it
impossible to compile Debian kernel packages for armel. Not marking
as "grave" because other architectures are still functional.]

Have you tried using `DEB_HOST_ARCH=armel` and `--arch arm`?

I'm able to build an armel kernel_image deb like this:

$ DEB_HOST_ARCH=armel fakeroot make-kpkg --arch arm --cross-compile arm-linux-gnueabi- -j 5 kernel_image

My armel system seems to be OK with it. If I don't set the DEB_HOST_ARCH
and build with --arch arm, my armel system is not OK with it: dpkg will
complain about the deb being made for arm, not armel.

I'm not sure how much of a bug this is. Can you confirm if you're able
to build armel .debs by using DEB_HOST_ARCH?

There might be a lack of documentation showing that this is now how to
build for armel, there's only 1 little part of the README and the example
is for i386/amd64, not armel. But I get the impression that the "merge"
really did happen.

This also looks very similar to bug 671533 [1].

Have you tried the options --arch=arm, --subarch=armel? Based on how I
got things working elsewhere, I suspect this combination of options
*might* get the desired result.

If so, this surprises me a bit, since you can use --arch=amd64, rather
than --arch=x86 --subarch=amd64.

thanks

Sorry for being slow at replying. I tried versions 13.003 and 13.008
of kernel-package, and the armel architecture is still broken:

* in 13.003, the arches/armel.mk rule file was re-added, but
  architecture.mk does not include it, so it is inoperative;

* and in 13.008, it is included conditionally under a test
  ifeq ($(strip $(architecture)),arm)
  but itself starts with
  ifeq ($(strip $(architecture)),armel)
so the two never match together.

Now I really don't know whether the proper value of $(architecture)
for armel should be "arm" or "armel", nor what $(DEB_HOST_ARCH) should
be, that's a Debian policy decision that's way above my head; but at
any rate, a consistent choice should be made, and it should be
accessible.

Hi,

Based on another bug report about a Sheeevaplug (which is an
armel machine), the reported architecture was arm. What exactly is th
error you get? Could you attach a build log with the failure? What
does dpkg-architecture show on your armel box?

Hi,

The following change has been committed for this bug by
 Manoj Srivastava <srivasta@golden-gryphon.com> on Wed, 14 May 2014 10:57:44 -0700.
The fix will be in the next upload.
=========================================================================
[master]: various bug fixes

* No longer have generated kernel images depend on ksymoops, a long
defunct package, since it is useless with kernels >= 2.6.
  (Closes: #748066).
* When the user asks for the arch name to be part of the kernel image
package version string, only image and debig packages included the
arch in the name. This commit makes the name of the header package
also be consistent with the image names. At this point, the source and
document/manual package names remain generic, since arch specific
differences should not exist in those packages. (Closes: #568576).
* the image packages generated by kernel-package also build in the
modules requested in the configuration file, so there is no
linux-moules-* package. However, in case there are dependencies on
that package name, the image package now also claims to provide the
  modules package. (Closes: #599815).
* In order to ease the life of people cross compiling, or building for a
subarch, do not call dpkg-gencontrol with the host archtecture, but
rather, with the architecture we built the kernel image for.
  (Closes: #563300).
* Hopped on to an armel machine to test make-kpkg. The CPU is reported
as arm by dpkg-architecture, so the top level logic in kernel-package
was correct.Unfortunately, the armel specific file wassumed the CPU
was armel, so nothing got included. Corrected that inner check in
  this release. (Closes: #664854).
