Hello,

Discussion is underway in debian-devel about proposing the creation of a
virtual package that represents an icon theme package that follows the
freedesktop.org naming spec for icon themes[1].

I'll hopefully be able to update this bug report with the outcome of the
discussion, as requested in [2].

It's been 15 days, though, and nobody reacted to the initial message
posted to debian-devel... Should I try to "bump" the debian-devel
discussion, or can we safely assume nobody objects to the proposal?

Based on the discussion on debian-desktop, I think there is a
consensus on the general idea. Do you have a proposed entry for the
virtual-packages-names-list.txt file ready?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Cool. I thought of something like:

<virtual package name> icon theme compliant to the
freedesktop.org Icon Naming Specification

As for the package name itself, I like fdo-icon-theme. Would that be
too specific? I wonder if something more generic like
desktop-icon-theme would be more appropriate.

Since there has been no discussion in debian-devel, I found it
unnecessary to summarize the outcome of the discussion here. So, if
there's any questions about the proposal or the brief debian-desktop
discussion, please let me know and I'll try to clear it up.

Regards,

Looks fine to me.

I like embedding the standard to which it complies in the name. We may
end up with some other standard in the future, in which case we may want
another virtual package.

Nope, I think we're good.

We don't have a real formal policy for adding virtual package names, but
for the record I second this, and am happy to see others who have reviewed
it second it. (Failing seconds, I'll probably make this change anyway for
the next release if there are no actual objections.)

On the other hand, it is always helpful for the policy editor when a second
concerned developer read the proposal and second it. This allow to avoid typos and
other minor errors that the editor is not in the best position to catch.

Dear Fernando and everybody,

is the introduction of the "fdo-icon-theme" still planned ? If yes, would the
section "Miscellaneous" of virtual-package-names-list.txt be appropriate ?

Have a nice day,

Sorry it me so long to reply, the last couple weeks have been unusually
busy...

I think the rationale behind fdo-icon-theme still holds, but I don't plan
to package pa-applet anymore in the short or medium term. I don't oppose
using the section "Miscellaneous".

Thanks for looking into this.
