Hi,
the ttf-freefont (the same is true for the otf-freefont package) package
currently includes a font file called
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/Untitled1.ttf. It is compiled from the
Malayalam.sfd file. I am not even sure if this is supposed to get installed at
all, because it apparently does not contain any glyphs -- but if it is, it
should probably get a sound name. I don't think this is acceptable:
$ grep -i untitled Malayalam.sfd
FontName: Untitled1
FullName: Untitled1
FamilyName: Untitled1

According to the policy of fonts team in Debian whenever we have
source of a font we will try to build them
while creating the package.

Umm not sure how it is actually built but by looking at the package
source I see they are using some scripts which are located here
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-fonts/packages/ttf-freefont/trunk/debian/rules?view=markup
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/pkg-fonts/packages/ttf-freefont/trunk/debian/scripts/
Are these the same scripts as present in the upstream SVN?

If these are not the original script may be if you can release SFD
tarball with these scripts. It should be
easy to rebuild the package
>Could you please explain what exactly you're trying to accomplish?
I'm not the maintainer of the ttf-freefonts but I found the bug on the
list and since Malayalm was involved I forwarded it to santhos :).

These scripts are not meant to build the whole font. Their purpose is
to strip out some Unicode ranges from the font and create a specific
TTF file for the one and only use of the Debian Installer. The point
here being then size reduction (Debian Installer is very constrained
in size).
To Steve (we had mails exchanges together in the past about Freefont maintenance
in Debian) : Davide Viti, who was mostly maintaining the Debian
package up to now, wants to slowly step out....at least from being the
main (and only) maintainer. The maintenance of the FreeFont package in
Debian (and as a side effect, Ubuntu) will be taken over collectively
by the "pkg-fonts" team (pkg-fonts-devel@lists.debian.org) that
already maintains a big bunch of various free fonts for Debian.

The script debian/scripts/convertfonts.sh is used in the
override_dh_install rule in debian/rules to actually build all the fonts.

You are free to build FreeFont any way you like, of course.
The TrueType and OpenType binaries *intended by the FreeFont people*
are provided in packages.
They are built from the scripts at the FreeFont site. Those scripts
set various FontForge options, and perform hinting, etc. If you don't
do these properly, the font will not behave as intended *by the
FreeFont developers*.
I know little of how Debian actually goes about making packages.
However, I was in contact with some Debian volunteers a few years ago,
and at the time, they understood the intended process. I assume the
Debian scripts incorporate the FreeFont scripts somehow. (I've never
checked.)
But again, to build FreeFont as intended by FreeFont developers, one
should use the build scripts in SVN.
Now I've re-considered the SFD packaging. As I said, I had always
just followed precedent, but I think those tarballs would make better
sense if they included all the build scripts. So in the upcoming
release, you will be able to build the binaries *as intended by us* by
running 'make' from within the SFD package.
Thanks for your input!

That's great news, thank you very much!
BTW, will the next SFD tarball relase also drop the Malayalam.sfd file?

BTW, whatis the prefered font format by FreeFont upstream, Truetype or
Opentype? I am asking for two reasons:
1) In Debian we are switching to format-independent package names for
fonts, i.e. ttf-freefont will become fonts-freefont (or maybe
fonts-gnu-freefont, as the freefont name is a bit generic) with one of
the next uploads. That means, we have to decide for one font format in
the packages, as we are not going to package both ttf and otf.
2) Currently, FreeMono is the default font for the texttopdf filter in
cups-filters, and the filter *needs* it in ttf format. I have currently
sent a patch against cups-filters to query fontconfig for a valid
alternative if freemono.ttf could not be found, but it sounds reasonable
nevertheless to at least provide the prefered font in the expected
format.
Maybe, if you happen to prefer otf, we could provide Sans and Serif in
otf and Mono in ttf?

AFAICT, the SFD files are using cubic (PostScript) splines, so
CFF-flavoured OpenType (aka .otf) is the natural choice. Converting
cubic splines to quadratic ones, for TrueType, in not a lossless
conversion[1] and thus, IMO, should be avoided if possible.

Hi Khaled,
I agree as to a preference of cubic over quadratic splines, and also,
the conversion from cubic to quadratic splines loses information.
Both TrueType and OpenType are wrapper formats, that can contain
either cubic (Type1) or quadratic (TrueType) contours.
However some technologies (afaik) such as TrueType instructions, only
apply to quadratic contours. I know from past experiments that in
some environments, this can make a big difference in display quality.
Either works well with current free-sofware technology. I'm now in the
process of testing Vista (again) and Windows 7, in which it's much
harder to get good quality.
For the future, I think only OpenType is moving forward though. I'm
keeping TrueType primarily for older systems.

While I agree that openType might be the format of the future, we
still need to have something we can offer to cups-filters, at least as
long as it isn't able to embed Opentype fonts.

I'm not sure what you're talking about here.
What are you referring to with "embed OpenType fonts"? I did a
search, and found nothing about this.
These are probably separate issues (or should be)
For example, one solution for the CUPs problem is for CUPSs to
maintain their own copy of FreeMono,
(in whatever form they prefer), but separate from the system fonts.
Cheers!

CUPS has switched to PDF-based printing. That means, roughly, if you
want to print a raw text file, e.g. 'lp ~/.bashrc', it needs to get
converted into a PDF file in one step of the process. A font is needed
to render your text in the PDF file and this font is embedded into the
PDF. Currently the filter that does this does not support CFF fonts.
It will fail here:

This README file might provide some explanation:

This problem is already solved upstream (since yesterday). ;)
cups-filters now merely needs one monospaced TrueType font installed
on the system that it can use as a fallback for FreeMono or Courier or
whatever. No need to carry around own copies of fonts.

My understanding, CUPS *requires* the presence of such a font, and
fails badly without it.
This is why the dependency existed in the first place.
However, system fonts ought to be the choice of the admin (or superuser).
This is why I proposed that it be bundled with a font it would always work with
(and that this font *not* be installed on the system).
However, if CUP can do the right thing (fail gracefully, informing the
user of the nature of
the problem and how to solve it), then I will agree with you.
Thanks for the explanations!
