Subject: On kfreebsd-*, please integrate kbdcontrol within keyboard-configuration.

Package: keyboard-configuration
Version: 1.75
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

it would be nice if, as on Linux architectures, keyboard-configuration
would also configure the console keyboard configuration.

Currently, this has to be done by dpkg-reconfigure'ing another package:
kbdcontrol, so it would be nice to have all that done by a single
package, hence providing the same interface to configure the console
keyboard on all Debian architectures.

Cheers,

OdyX

Does it really on Linux architectures? I've just tried to make sure,
and it didn't, only dpkg-reconfigure console-setup does.

No.

It seems kbdcontrol *also* provides a keyboard mapping question
indeed... Ccing BSD people: do you really want to maintain bsd-only
keymaps, and not just rely on xkb keymaps provided by console-setup?

Actualy it is dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration. Doesn't it
configure the keyboard on the console? What happens if you manualy run
setupcon as root? If setupcon helps, then perhaps kbdcontrol overwrites
the configuration of console-setup in which case the bug has to be
reassigned to kbdcontrol.

No specific reason. When I added kbdcontrol in 2006 I wasn't aware of
any alternative. I think nobody cared since then.

So what do you suggest exactly? That we drop
/usr/share/syscons/keymaps/* and use the ones from console-setup?
(are they _really_ compatible?) Or just that we read keyboard setup
from /etc/default/keyboard instead of using our own template?

Anyway in either case it's a kbdcontrol bug, reassigning.

The following is what /etc/init.d/kbd does for Linux:

if which setupcon >/dev/null
then
    HAVE_SETUPCON=yes
fi

if [ -z "${HAVE_SETUPCON}" -a some_other_tests ]; then
configure kbd & font without console-setup
fi

[ -z "$HAVE_SETUPCON" ] \
|| log_action_msg "Skipping font and keymap setup (handled by console-setup)"

> (are they _really_ compatible?)

They have to be compatible. In case they are not, please fill a bug
report.

Subject: do we need to provide keymaps in kbdcontrol?
Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2012 21:22:08 +0200
Hi all,

I have the impression that everything needed to handle keyboard
properly on GNU/kFreeBSD is already in place:

- keyboard-configuration provides the user setting (maybe fed from
D-I) and /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup

- In turn, /etc/init.d/keyboard-setup uses /bin/setupcon from console-setup

- In turn, /bin/setupcon uses /bin/kbdcontrol to load fonts from
console-setup-freebsd.

Do we need to do anything else in kbdcontrol to make this work? It
seems that the only missing thing is removing the fonts we're
currently providing in /usr/share/syscons/keymaps, or move them aside
to another package, since these aren't being used anymore.

I think that for now I'll assume everything is working fine with the
new scheme. In this scenario the old debconf questions and their
associated keyboard files are harmless, and still useful for users
upgrading from Squeeze.

At some point we can remove support for the old mechanism completely,
but this doesn't necessarily have to happen in Wheezy IMHO.
