Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Richard Hartmann <richih.mailinglist@gmail.com>

* Package name    : disktest
  Version         : 0.20120220
  Upstream Author : Richard Hartmann <richih.mailinglist@gmail.com>
* URL             : https://github.com/RichiH/disktest
* License         : GPL
  Programming Lang: POSIX Shell
  Description     : verify disk integrity

disktest will test your disks using S.M.A.R.T. and badblocks, saving the
results into files named after your disk's vendor, model, and serial
number.

Basic precautions have been made, i.e. disktest will refuse to operate
on mounted disks. Still, by design, disktest will erase any and all data
on disks you decide to test. You have been warned.

There are already several programs with this name, including a
command-line program from NetApp, so perhaps you should choose something
different.

That repository contains a Perl script.

I don't see that check in the current version. I would suggest that by
default this should print a warning and prompt for confirmation. Of
course there could also be an option for scripts to override this.

Hmm, back to the thinking tower, then!

But seriously, it's hard to come up with unique yet descriptive names.
Suggestions appreciated.

I copied over my most recent ITP, and you are absolutely correct.
Sorry, and thanks for catching this.

The check is implemented within badblocks itself, but I should
probably check it myself, as well.

Richard

I was under the impression that some SMART self-tests could also be
destructive, but I think I must have been mistaken.

I have read this several times, but never encountered one, myself. I
know _old_ disks lost data if you enabled SMART as they would reserve
the first(!) few blocks for SMART storage, but other than that, I
never saw anything in the wild.

retitle 660576 RFP: disktest -- verify disk integrity
noowner 660576
tag 660576 - pending
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of disktest back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 12 months.

If you are still interested in adopting disktest, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

 retitle 660576 ITP: disktest -- verify disk integrity
 owner 660576 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <660576@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,
