Now that x-ttcidfont-conf has been removed, Debian's custom FontPath
serves no purpose, please remove it. I have attached a patch.

Here is a bonus patch to replace x-ttcidfont-conf with a separate
symlink farm maintained using triggers. It uses an IFS hack for a slight
speedup but you may prefer to use the sed version for readability.

I'm very much not in favour of adding such complexity to maintainer
scripts.

Would it be acceptable to add it to a shell script instead?

Well maintainer scripts are shell scripts. My main worry is who would
maintain that script?

I don't expect it would need much maintenance, but if it has any issues,
since I wrote it, I will take care of any needed fixes. You would just
need to bounce me the bug since I'm not subscribed to xorg bugs.

The alternative to the script would just be to ignore fonts not
installed in the X11 dirs and let users create symlinks manually in the
fontpath catalogue dirs.

The consequence would be that apps that use server-side fonts could only
use fonts from the standard builtin dirs under /usr/share/fonts/X11/
which has been the case since font packages are dropping defoma hints.
