[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: virtualbox

Dear Maintainer,

Since upgrading from squeeze to wheezy, virtualbox frequently completely locks
up or crashes the host system. Most of the time, the guest doesn't complete the
bootup sequence before the whole (host) system crashes and reboots or
completely locks up, but occasionally the guest can run OK for some time. This
affects at least virtualbox versions 4.1.6 and 4.1.8. When the issue occurs, the
VBox.log file is empty.

mathias@mathiast-wheezy:~/VirtualBox VMs/Q-Free Win 7$ ls -l Logs/
total 252
-rw------- 1 mathias mathias 84187 Jan  7 23:24 VBox.log
-rw------- 1 mathias mathias     0 Jan  6 10:46 VBox.log.1          <===!
-rw------- 1 mathias mathias 84534 Jan  5 21:13 VBox.log.2
-rw------- 1 mathias mathias 84506 Jan  5 21:10 VBox.log.3

The affected host machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad X200s and the guest is a fairly
standard Win7 64bit system with pretty much only MS office on it.

As this system (host/guest combo) has been rock solid for over a year with
squeeze, I have dug a little bit deeper and found it only to affect the 3.x
series kernel used in wheezy.

I have recompiled vboxdrv.ko from virtualbox versions 4.1.6 and 4.1.8 for use
with linux kernel image 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem (2.6.32-38) from squeeze, and when
installing that kernel with the recompiled vboxdrv module on the (otherwise
"pure" wheezy) system the problem does not seem to be reproducible. Both host
and guest are then stable.

Seems the problem is related with:
1) combination of host/guest system's architecture,
2) host system kernel.

To make this clear, I have conducted a set of experiments.
The host machine is a eMachines e732g laptop with Debian Squeeze i386 installed.
In particular, kernel and virtualbox was taken from squeeze-backports.
Host system has 2Gb ram. Amount of ram, available for the guest
system, is 768Mb.

Experiments:
1st one:
- reboot host,
- start virtualbox,
- start virtual machine with bio-linux-6.0.30.iso as first boot device.

2nd one:
- reboot host,
- start virtualbox,
- start virtual machine with ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso as first
boot device.

3rd one:
- reboot host,
- start virtualbox,
- start virtual machine with ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso as first boot device.

In the 1st and 2nd cases host system ALWAYS went to reboot or hangs
and guest systems
are both amd64. In 3rd - everything seems to be OK (at least after 5
cycles) - guest system is i386.

Every image can be easily taken from the net, just in case.

FYI. Problem remains also for recent kernel and virtualbox versions.

Confirmed to still occur for the following versions:
ii linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae 3.2.18-1
        Linux 3.2 for modern PCs

x86 virtualization solution - base binaries
ii virtualbox-dkms 4.1.14-dfsg-1
x86 virtualization solution - kernel module sources for dkms
ii virtualbox-guest-additions-iso 4.1.14-1
guest additions iso image for VirtualBox
ii virtualbox-qt 4.1.14-dfsg-1

This appears to the same as upstream ticket #10528

https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10528

Applying the disable NMI watchdog workaround has been successful on my
setup and provided a stable system over several (>10) boot cycles.

I have uploaded virtualbox 4.1.18-dfsg-1 which contains
the fix.
