I do, but rename it to something else otherwise gdm will never work.
Attached is the file I have been using. It's one of those laptops with
the dual cards.

The log file attached in the original report was the one when i was
running the fglrx driver.

I did notice in that attachment:
[ 47.916] (--) Chipset Supported AMD Graphics Processor (0x6740) found
[ 47.920] (II) fglrx: intel VGA device detected, load intel driver.
[ 47.920] (II) LoadModule: "intel"
[ 47.920] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

It said /usr/lib64/fglrx was not found, and thats an error, what package
makes that directory?

That's strange. The package has been multiarched, so files should be
in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.

Also, what are the contents of your xorg.conf and have you run
"atitconfig --initial"?

Best wishes,
Mike

There is a chance there is something hanging around from when I built
the drivers myself. I was pretty sure I got them all BUT I could not
be absolutely certain (as noone could be certain) every single one of
them got nuked.

> Also, what are the contents of your xorg.conf and have you run

It was in the last email, or you can get it at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=15;filename=xorg.conf.fglrx-0;att=1;bug=649239

The logs for the flgrx driver are at:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=5;filename=Xorg.0.log;att=1;bug=649239

I can email both/either again if you prefer.
Also 11-11-3 had the same problem, but that's not too surprising.

The files are in /usr/lib/fglrx

However the driver is most definitely looking for files there, I ran
a strace and it clearly is trying. Running strings on fglrx_drv.so
also showed this directory. That is even the file in the source
archive at xpic_64a/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so

I have the entire strace output, but the bit where it all goes bad is
just a few lines:

11744 write(0, "(II) fglrx(0): PowerXpress: Disc"..., 54) = 54
11744 lstat("/usr/lib64/fglrx", 0x7fff34855930) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

11744 write(0, "(WW) fglrx(0): PreInit PowerXpre"..., 42) = 42
11744 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---

I even tried building the packages myself to see if that helped, it
didn't :(

What happens if you
  mkdir /usr/lib64/fglrx
Run strace again - what files are accessed next?

Andreas

I'm on the wrong computer at the moment, but it was one of the switchgl
programs in there. I tried symlinking it but then it complained about
permissions (which means the programmers are using stat and not lstat)
so I copied them. It still crashed.

I'll re-run it tonight but I'm pretty sure this is what it was doing.

Further information.
I used the ati download but I believe it is the same error messages.

upsetting the driver.

Is this a xserver-xorg-video-intel problem? I am the first to admit I
might of got this wrong.

There is something very strange about this. fglrx should not be
loading the intel driver. At the same point, I get "(WW) fglrx: No
matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@1:0:1)". Could you
see what happens if you blacklist the intel driver?

For reference, here is the same section of my xorg log.

It's rather insistent, I have attached a new log file.

My log file gets more curious after this line in the logs, I'm not sure
what it is telling me but it is as if it doesn't like the chipset.

I tried using the expeimental xorg to see if it made a difference.
I now get this:
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx
(II) Loading PCS database from /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
(--) Chipset Supported AMD Graphics Processor (0x6740) found
(II) fglrx: intel VGA device detected, load intel driver.
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
(II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.11.99.901, module version = 2.17.0
(II) AMD Video driver is running on a device belonging to a group targeted for this release
(II) AMD Video driver is signed X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: pciTag

This sounds a bit like
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42690
but I cannot see how it can be fixed.

fglrx has to be ported again for the new Xorg release. Since it is RC
there is no chance that it will happen in the next months.

This isn't fglrx's fault, since Xorg is changing the API again and again..

RC?

> This isn't fglrx's fault, since Xorg is changing the API again and again..
I can roll back to the ones in unstable and not use the experimental
ones to get the API back but then it crashes. I think that crash is in
the intel driver because gdb shows a structure is not being properly
defined and that's what causes the crash (ptr->struct->thing with struct
NULL by memory).
