Subject: Torque: New upstream release
Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2011 15:07:53 -0300
Package: torque
Version: 2.4.16
Distribution: Sid

Since version 2.5.4, Torque has the ability to schedule gpus. It would
be nice to see it packaged, as gpus are currently really presents

As per the link and quote below, the vendor recommends the version
2.5.x if no NUMA architecture is required and the latest is 2.5.8.
(should be considered to make available a NUMA and a non-NUMA version?)

http://www.clusterresources.com/downloads/torque/
"Welcome to the TORQUE download page.

The builds currently supported by Adaptive Computing are 2.4.x, 2.5.x and 3.0.x.

The 2.4.x branch is the current stable build. By stable we mean we
plan only to do bug fixes in future releases of the 2.4 branch. We
will not add any new features or functionality except in a very
limited number of situations. Build torque-2.4.12.tar.gz is currently
the latest 2.4.x release.

The 2.5.x branch will continue to have minor features and
functionality added to it. The build has been deployed successfully in
many environments and is considered reliable. Build
torque-2.5.5.tar.gz is the latest release and the one we recommend
most sites use.

The 3.0.x branch has everything 2.5.x has plus it supports NUMA
architectures and also supports multiple pbs_mom daemons on a single
host. The 3.0.x branch is not backward compatible. Even though the
3.0.x code branch will work on all platforms we recommend 2.5.x for
sites that do not need NUMA or multi-mom support. Build
torque-3.0.0.tar.gz is the latest release for the 3.0.x branch."

That branch is also based on a different license, I am not sure if it
can uploaded to Debian.

We would also want additional hands for the maintenance, I presume. As long as 2.4 is supported I do not think we should drop it. Cheers, Steffen

Could you please clarify which parts of TORQUE fall under the additional

Dominique,

The license applies to all TORQUE releases from 2.5 and later. Is that what
you need or do you want it to be in the license itself.

Unfortunately this means that TORQUE 2.5 and later cannot be uploaded to
any distributions due to the license conflict.

Dominique,

What are the restrictions?

Section 5 of the old license is now section 3 of the new license.

3. Redistributions in any form must be accompanied by information on how
to obtain
complete source code for TORQUE and any modifications and/or additions
to
TORQUE. The source code must either be included in the distribution or
be available
for no more than the cost of distribution plus a nominal fee, and all
modifications and
additions to the Software must be freely redistributable by any party
(including
    Licensor) without restriction.

After December 31, 2001, the restrictions in the original license expired
and those provisions were edited out since they no longer apply.

This license covers use of the OpenPBS v2.3 software (the "Software") at
your site or location, and, for certain users, redistribution of the
Software to other sites and locations. Use and redistribution of
OpenPBS v2.3 in source and binary forms, with or without modification,
are permitted provided that all of the following conditions are met.
After December 31, 2001, only conditions 3-6 must be met:

In the original license conditions 1 and 2 were the restrictive conditions.
Those are no longer in force and the new license reflects that.

Please let me know what you think is not the same still.

Michael,

There is some confusion about the TORQUE license and how it affects its
distribution.

I am forwarding this thread to you I have had with Dominique Belhachemi to
see if we can help get some clarity on the licensing issue.

Regards

Ken

Dominique,

I have not hear back from you after my last e-mail. I pointed out the
provision 5 from the first license is now provision 3 in the updated
license. Provisions 1 and 2 in the original license expired so we removed
them for clarity.

Please let me know how we can help you in understanding that this license
is open or show us what we need to change in order to make it clear that it
is open.

Regards
