Package: hplip-cups
Version: 3.11.7-1
Severity: important
My server has hplip-cups installed. Today, when I was trying to upgrade
some packages, the update stopped and printed "Password for root on
localhost?" The prompt did not respond to Ctrl-C or Ctrl-\, but
pressing Enter made it continue. There's really no reason to ask for
the root password since by definition an upgrade with apt is done as
root. Also, my system does have a root password, but some are
sudo-only.

severity 640939 serious
kthxbye
I'm raising the severity of this bug to serious. Policy §3.9.1:
Package maintainer scripts may prompt the user if necessary.
Prompting must be done by communicating through a program, such as
`debconf', which conforms to the Debian Configuration Management
Specification, version 2 or higher.
This package is not doing that, this prompt is not necessary, and it
breaks unattended upgrades. It also happened to occur, this time when
dovecot was also being upgraded, and therefore my IMAP server was down,
which is what alerted me to the problem.

thanks
Hello all,
I discussed this with Till, and we both have no real idea how to get
to a situation where lpadmin as root asks for a password. It is
already called with -h /var/run/cups/cups.sock to ensure it's not
talking to a remote server. It seems you need a particular cups
configuration to achieve this. Can you please attach your
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, /etc/cups/client.conf, and ~/.cups/client.conf ?
(You might not have the latter two)
Thanks,
Martin

Have you tried upgrading hplip-cups? That's how I get it; in fact, it
just happened again the other day. I originally filed this bug there,
but the maintainer reassigned it here. Anyway, the cupsd.conf is
attached; the other two don't exist.

You are using Kerberos? This could be a consequence of #663995. The
original Red Hat report is at:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=837602
I tested this conjecture after installing and setting up Kerberos.
1. Used your cupsd.conf with DefaultAuthType commented out so that a
print queue could be created:
lpadmin -p TEST-K -v file:/dev/null -m drv:///hpcups.drv/hp-business_inkjet_1200.ppd
2. Uncommented DefaultAuthType and restarted cups.
3. touch /usr/share/cups/ppd-updaters/*
4. root@cups-unstable:~# apt-get --reinstall install cups

Well, yes, and no. I have it set up for Kerberos, but I'm not actually
using it for anything at the moment. I don't ever remotely administer
the cups server; I just SSH into it if I need to mess with the print
queues.

My logs don't go back far enough for me to see whether this message
appeared.

Yeah, that's it. It looks like the issue here is that cups prompts to
use Basic authentication when there's no chance that will work. So once
it stops doing that, the upgrade issue will go away automatically.

You don't fancy reducing the severity of the bug, do you? None of the
package maintainer scripts are doing the prompting, only Kerberos users
are affected and there is an easy way to work round it.
Cheers,
Brian.

I don't especially. The fact is that the bug does cause the upgrade
process to hang, and since it very often happens during a dovecot
upgrade (coincidentally, but frequently), it means that important
services are down for longer than I want (and when I notice, I'm often
not in a position to fix the problem). This would be an even worse
disaster if it happened at the same time as a postfix upgrade. Upgrades
must be able to run unattended, period.

Hi all,
during BSP Essen I stumbled upon this thread, now I found time for
some testing.
[Martin Pitt]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
cups 1.5.3-2.6, system without Kerberos, DefaultAuthType set to
"Negotiate" just for testing, no other changes to cupsd.conf:
root@eagle:~# lpadmin -h /var/run/cups/cups.sock -d <valid printer name>
Password for root on localhost?
[need to press return key]
lpadmin: Unauthorized
root@eagle:~# lpadmin -h 127.0.0.1 -d <valid printer name>
lpadmin: Unauthorized
root@eagle:~# lpadmin -h localhost -d <valid printer name>
lpadmin: Unauthorized
root@eagle:~#
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMO the root pw questioning was most probably introduced by adding
extended Kerberos support upstream, therefore expecting a valid
hostname/IP as server argument causing problems in related cases, too.
(upstream revision 9732 on trunk, see URL in message #54 above.)
Maybe replacing "-h /var/run/cups/cups.sock" by "-h localhost" would
solve the reported problem (and related ones) -- if no sideeffects
are triggered.
A related problem on a kerberized system: #663995,
upstream: http://www.cups.org/str.php?L4140

Wolfgang

[ cups source package 1.5.3-2.9, debian/cups.postinst ]
The attached patch seems to work for me. Please test it (as outlined in
message #49 by Brian).
"-h localhost" was changed to "-h /var/run/cups/cups.sock" a while ago
(15 Sep 2009: cups.postinst and init script).
Don't know if changing it back for cups.postinst would cause any
problem -- my tests revealed none so far.

I am far from confident enough in this patch to apply it so late in the
freeze. So I reported the bug upstream: http://www.cups.org/str.php?L4140
As you have a working test-case, could you possibly:
- test cups from unstable with the attached patch on top;
- test cups from experimental (1.6.1) ?
(If you prefer, I can provide you binary builds of cups for amd64/i386 with
the patch if that's easier for you…)
Thanks in advance, cheers,
OdyX

With your patch applied to the version in unstable, dpkg-buildpackage
would hang (on arch amd64).
IMO this is due to a minor error in your patch. Using the attached one,
building succeded and -- at least for my test cases -- the reported
failure doesn't occure.
Will test the version in experimental later on.

Hrm weird; both patches are afaik correct.
Anyway, given your report, I will probably upload a new version for this
serious issue as soon as the actual version would have migrated to Wheezy.
Many thanks for your investigation time and dedication!

Same result for cups 1.6.1 in experimental: builds, reported failure gone.

So I've prepared an upload for cups (versioned as 1.5.3-2.14) and
uploaded it to DELAYED/3, diff is attached.
Regards,
OdyX
P.S. The DELAYED/3 choice is there because the previous version should
migrate first.
