Subject: upower battery status flashing when both AC and battery are plugged in
Date: Tue, 23 Aug 2011 14:56:42 +0200
Package: upower
Version: 0.9.12-1+b1
Severity: normal
When I plug in both AC and the battery, the KDE power management icon keeps
showing "no battery" for a fraction of a second, about twice a minute. Directly
after plugging AC in, there's even mire flashing. This did not happen before I
changed to Debian testing (I used Kubuntu before). I noticed that the backend
for power management was changed from HAL to upower, and indeed upower is the
problem here. Running "upower --monitor" for about a minute while not changing
anything power-related gives this output, in sync with the GUI:

looks like a faulty battery or a kernel issue.
If you kill upowerd and then monitor the sysfs entries, do you still see
this behaviour?

Hi,
it seems I did not supply the correct version number when issuing the "found"
command to config@bugs.debian.org... at least it complained in the reply:
"There is no source info for the package 'upower' at version '0.9.13-1' with
architecture ''
Unable to make a source version for version '0.9.13-1'"
Did I do something wrong?
> looks like a faulty battery or a kernel issue.
I am quite sure the battery is fine - when I still used Kubuntu and HAL, there
was no such issue, and it showed up immediately after installing Debian. I can
try a Kubuntu live CD to verify this.

Which sysfs entries, something in /sys/power? And how can I monitor them?

A Kubuntu version which still used HAL uses a completely different kernel, so
this is not comparable.

The sysfs entries shown in the upower log.

Hi Michael,

I meant to exclude a hardware issue by trying Kubuntu.
As for the kernel... I could try to compile an old kernel myself, however I do
not know if that will work at all.

You mean, /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0 ? I could not find these
anywhere in /sys, nor could I find any upower log file on my system. Or maybe I
am totally misunderstanding what I am supposed to do...

Hi again,
in the mean time, I learned about "upower --dump", which also gave me the
sysfs path I needed. So I ran the following command:
while [ 1 = 1 ]; do cat
/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0/present &&
sleep 0.2; done
Even in the period where KDE shows "no battery present", between the "device
removed" and "device" added printed by the monitor, the file existed and
contained a "1".
Does that answer your question?
Kind regards,
Ralf

Subject: upower battery status flashing when both AC and battery are plugged in
Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2012 14:57:09 +0100
Hi upower list,
on my laptop (a HP Compaq 315), upower is acting strange: If both the AC and
the battery are plugged in, the battery status as reported by upower flashes.
Once or twice a minute, the battery status icon in the system tray (I am using
KDE 4.6) flashes to "no battery available." Running "upower --monitor" for a
while shows that the problem is in upower itself, not somewhere in the GUI:

I did not touch the power supply at all while taking above logfile.
This behaviour is quite annoying, because the blinking in the bottom-right
corner sometimes distracts from what I actually want to concentrate on, and it
circumvents KDE's mechanism to only show the battery icon if something
interesting happens (like plugging a power supply in/out, or running low on
battery): Since KDE thinks the battery is remove and re-added every
~30seconds, it keeps showing and hiding that icon...

This looks like a kernel bug to me. Does the device keep appearing and
disappearing from /sys/class/power_supply?

No, it does not: I ran
while [ 1 ]; do ls /sys/class/power_supply; sleep 0.05; done
and "BAT0" was always present.
Also, if it s a kernel bug, it is a regression: Until ~8 months ago, I had
Kubuntu installed with an older kernel, and used HAL. There was no such
problem back then.
Kind regards,
Ralf

Subject: [upower] Same problem with HP ProBook 4510s
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2012 13:48:06 +0800
Package: upower
Version: 0.9.15-3
--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
I have the same problem, upowerd makes my CPU run at close to 100% all
the time, the battery is reported as connected and disconnected
continuously and the only way to make it stop is to either remove the
battery or kill upowerd.
I'm not sure when it started, the battery icon appearing and
disappearing it's probably several months but only recently I noticed
the 100% CPU issue. I'm not sure, maybe I didn't notice it before
because it seems to happen mostly when I leave the laptop on overnight.
This is probably a duplicate of bug #606414 and possibly also #596721
and #619343. It seemes several other Debian based distributions are also
affected, searching for "upowerd device
removed:/org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0" on google returns
lots bug reports.
Regards,
Paolo

Subject: Bug#638970: Probably caused by acpi battery kernel module and fixed
in kernel to 3.2.18-1
Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2012 14:32:23 +0800
Hi,
It seems the bug, at least in my case, was caused by the acpi battery
kernel module reporting the battery as connected and disconnected
continuously.
Since I upgraded my kernel to 3.2.18-1 the battery icon stopped
flipping on and off and the cpu use by upowerd is pretty much normal.
upowerd --monitor shows a change in battery state every 20 seconds or so:
upower --monitor
Monitoring activity from the power daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
