Subject: Video playback with vdpau creates black flickering on the whole screen
Date: Thu, 28 Jul 2011 12:01:56 +0200
Package: nvidia-vdpau-driver
Version: 275.21-1
Severity: normal

Since a couple of versions (I noticed the issue first coming up two months
ago), playing any video using vdpau accelleration causes the screen to flicker:
large portions of the screen (usually starting at the height of the window
showing the video) become black for fractions of a second. Looks like some
form of framebuffer memory corruption.

Usually moving the window around the screen, or switching back&forth between
fullscreen fixes the problem.

I can replicate this issue only when using vdpau. I was able to reproduce it
using two different Quadro cards (one listed here), and an ION card, on two
different kernel/xorg versions showing the same exact problem.

Please try the 280.11 driver from experimental. Upstream changelog
recently mentioned several fixes concerning vdpau.

If this does not fix the problem, please report this problem directly to
nvidia, see their instructions:

Please post a note with a forum URL to this Debian bug report, so that
we may follow progress.

This is an upstream issue and not packaging related, so the Debian
NVIDIA Maintainers can't fix it.
Please report this problem directly to NVIDIA, their bug reporting
instructions can be found here:
  http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678
As this requires collecting system information with the
nvidia-bug-report.sh script (which can be found in the nvidia-glx
package) on your machine, we can't forward the bug on your behalf.
We would appreciate if you could post to this Debian bug report an URL
to a thread in the NVIDIA forum (either an existing one, where you added
more information or a newly created one) so that we can follow progress.

Thanks.

There have been several new releases since that bug was acknowledged by
NVIDIA, some mentioning VDPAU fixes in the changelog.

Did you try a more recent driver? Has this problem been solved inbetween?

I can confirm, that VDPAU is working correctly for me in Debian testing (using
nvidia-kernel-source).
