[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: NA
Version: NA
This is a wishlist bug.
Using Squeeze and wanted to install a new Brother HL-2130 laser printer.
Noticed that the printer is not in the printer list from Debian.
Went to Brother's Linux driver site
(http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#HL-2130),
download the packages and everthing works well.
Suggest to update Debian's driver list (since Brother is providing them) so
that these working drivers can be added to benefit future users.

Thanks for a nice report. I'm passing it on to the Debian CUPS

Some idea of the technical aspects in packaging a driver for the HL-2130
can be gleaned from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brother-cups-wrapper-laser/+bug/524779
There may also be an issue with licensing which would make such a
package unsuitable for Debian Main:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/25966
Comment #6 is the one to take note of.
Regards,
Brian.

This means a goal would be to get a driver included in a simple, free,
and distro-neutral collection such as openprinting-ppds and listed at
<http://www.openprinting.org/drivers>.
Michal, does the HL-2130 work as a generic postscript printer? (I am
guessing it does, based on a quick glance at the ppd and since the
HL-2140 can act as one.)
Brother's PPD for this model is licensed under the GPL. Their driver
package also includes some binary-only components to configure the
printer, unfortunately without an explicit license that would even
allow us to distribute it, so probably any open source driver is going
to lack some functionality in the short term.
The free part of the driver is not listed at
<http://www.openprinting.org/driver/Postscript-Brother/> as having
been incorporated into openprinting-ppds yet. Reassigning to the
foomatic-db package to pursue that.
Thanks for some useful pointers.
Jonathan

The HL-2140 Foomatic/hl1250 (up to 600x600 dpi, 1200x600 dpi eats the
first pages) and Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e work. hl1250 has more grey levels:

The postscript driver does not work, it just prints (many?) empty
pages.
