Subject: zutils: zcat completion only works with .gz files

Package: zutils
Version: 0.9-4
Severity: normal

Hi.

It seems to me that at least zcat's bash completion does only work with files ending in .gz.
It shoul IMHO work with ANY files (just adding .bz2, .xz,.... is not the right solution IMHO)
as you can zcat just any file (also plain text ones).

Cheers,
Chris.

retitle 634274 please create an updated bash-completion
tag 634274 upstream
severity 634274 wishlist
thanks

zutils should divert coreutils bash-completion and install an own one
that supports completion for the other compression formats.

retitle 634274 please update zcat completion
reassign 634274 bash-completion
thanks

i've found out that the completion for zcat is actually defined in
/etc/bash_completion, and by the nature of how bash-completion works,
it's apparently not possible to 'overload' once command and one command
only, which means that in the case of zutils, the only way on how to do
it would be to duplicate all entries for zcat in
/etc/bash-completion.d/zutils or something like that.

that in turn would mean that since we're duplicating that info, i would
need to keep it updated also for all other commands that share the same
completion as zcat, which makes this unpractical.

therefore, reassigning to bash-completion, may the source of the problem
be fixed there in the first place, rather than looking the symptom in
zutils.
