Subject: gnome-settings-daemon doesn't allow to log into IceWM, LXDE.
Date: Tue, 10 May 2011 21:41:42 -0300
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 2.30.2-3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Sorry if it shouldn't be tagged as critical, but maybe it should.
Also maybe it's a bug from gdm3 or xserver-xorg-core but I'm not knowledgeable
enough to discern.
I had here Xfce and IceWM from the repo plus LXDE built from upstream sources,
all working fine.
After a recent xserver-xorg-core upgrade (plus some other things but I'm
guessing this is the most related one)
I could only log into Xfce. Trying to log into LXDE or IceWM would make gdm3
automatically logout and return to the login screen.
I tried replacing gdm3 for SLiM but the same thing happened except that the
failed login attempt would end in the console terminal instead of the login
screen. Xfce still worked.
I could login and load any desktop environment, including IceWM and LXDE,
through startx (having to set the desired one through update-alternatives).
Since I'm not a system administrator nor a programmer I eventually decided to
reinstall as I thought I could've messed with something.
I installed a minimal system and built-up from it. All was working well until I
installed gnome-settings-daemon so I could theme gdm3.
Exactly the same issue of being unable to log into IceWM and LXDE from within
the display manager reappeared.
Removing gnome-settings-daemon solves the issue (but then no theming in gdm3).

I'll attach ~/.xsession-errors messages from an attempt of logging into icewm-
session
with gdm3 and another from an attempt to log in LXDE (startlxde).

Hi, Sérgio,

I was observing something similar in my sid box with wdm and icewm, and today
the behavior reached my testing box. There is an important difference, I do not
have gnome-settings-daemon installed.

> I tried replacing gdm3 for SLiM but the same thing happened except that the

Exactly the same for icewm+slim.

I was doing more tests and noticed that the problem does not happen here
with plain icewm, but when I invoke icewm-session from display manager.
When I select plain icewm, system starts (of course with no selected
background ...).

Looking at the packages upgraded today in my testing box, I notice that
together with many other packages, there was upgrades in the X stuff,

x11-utils:i386 (7.6+1, 7.6+2)
xserver-common:i386 (1.9.5-1, 1.10.1-2)
xserver-xorg-core:i386 (1.9.5-1, 1.10.1-2)
xserver-xorg-input-evdev:i386 (2.6.0-2, 2.6.0-2+b1)
xserver-xorg-input-kbd:i386 (1.6.0-1, 1.6.0-1+b1)
xserver-xorg-input-mouse:i386 (1.7.0-2, 1.7.0-2+b1)
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics:i386 (1.4.0-1, 1.4.0-1+b1)
xserver-xorg-input-wacom:i386 (0.10.10+20110203-1, 0.10.10+20110203-1+b1)
xserver-xorg-video-ati:i386 (6.14.1-1, 6.14.1-1+b1)
xserver-xorg-video-mach64:i386 (6.8.2-5, 6.9.0-1)
xserver-xorg-video-r128:i386 (6.8.1-5, 6.8.1-5+b1)
xserver-xorg-video-radeon:i386 (6.14.1-1, 6.14.1-1+b1)

in the glibc packages,

libc-bin:i386 (2.11.2-11, 2.13-4)
libc-dev-bin:i386 (2.11.2-11, 2.13-4)
libc6-amd64:i386 (2.11.2-11, 2.13-4)
libc6-dev:i386 (2.11.2-11, 2.13-4)
libc6-i686:i386 (2.11.2-11, 2.13-4)
libc6:i386 (2.11.2-11, 2.13-4)

as well as in the perl stuff.

That should give a clue for the knowledgeable guys of what's causing this
(if they don't know already).

was waiting for the perl stuff to settle so it was mostly the perl things
(minus a couple that were still broken) plus the xserver update (from a
layman view the latter must be the one that's incompatible with the display
manager's/session manager's setups).
Maybe in sid the glibc upgrades came afterwards, but I can't recall with
certainty.

I found out that what was preventing logging into LXDE was the 'pcmanfm --desktop' command.
Without it LXDE works even with gnome-settings-daemon installed.
icewm-session doesn't work though, even having nothing to do with pcmanfm (I tested in a clean session without ~/.icewm).
Since I don't know if LXDE from the repo works or not I'll report this to pcmanfm upstream but regarding Debian this bug then must go to icewm.

Simply putting it, running 'pcmanfm --desktop' or 'icewmbg' crashes the session.
I haven't tried with feh because I don't have it installed here.
It's valid to remember that this issue happens only with sessions ruled by display managers (at least wdm, slim and gdm3 with gnome-settings-daemon).

Hi, Sergio and (cc'ed) Debian X maintainers.

That is right. Since I use 'icewmbg' only to set a solid color as
background, I have put a dirty alternative personal 'icewmbg' at
/usr/local/bin,

# --- 8< --- /usr/local/bin/icewmbg ---------
#!/bin/sh

ICEWM_PREFERENCES=${HOME}/.icewm/preferences
echo "Warning: Running alternative /usr/local/bin/icewmbg"

if [ -r "$ICEWM_PREFERENCES" ]; then
    COLOR=$(grep ^DesktopBackgroundColor= $ICEWM_PREFERENCES)
    COLOR=${COLOR#DesktopBackgroundColor=}
    COLOR=$(eval echo $COLOR)
fi

if [ -n "$COLOR" ]; then
    xsetroot -solid $COLOR
fi
# --- 8< ------------------------------------

and with it, problem seems to disappear.

This seems to have been reported upstream for icewm and also to Ubuntu
launchpad.

Possible upstream bug report:

  http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100031&aid=3289566&group_id=31

Possible Ubuntu launchpad bug report:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/757610

I do not think gnome-settings-daemon is causing this bug report, just
triggering it, because it calls either 'pcmanfm --desktop' or 'icewmbg'.

I am more inclined to reassign this bug report to 'xserver-xorg-core', since
is the common link between 'pcmanfm --desktop' and 'icewmbg' that has been
upgraded just prior to the problem.

Also, this bug report may have the same origin as

http://bugs.debian.org/626774 (crash on loading background image)

because of the look of both Xorg errors (see below for mine).

I am cc'ing Debian X maintainers to know what they think.

More aditional information from my side:

These are the .xsession-error messages for the failing icewm-session
invocation from wdm (lines with AMD-WARNING are extra info I requested).
Related info for failed login in IceWM from gnome is given by Sergio Cipolla

Package: gnome-settings-daemon

I discovered that 'pcmanfm --desktop' only crashes the X session when it's set to use a background colour.
Setting it to use a background image doesn't crash the session.

Hi, Marko,

Noticed that you also posted the proposed fix to icewmbg related bug report,

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100031&aid=3289566&group_id=31

I am sending a copy of your reply to

http://bugs.debian.org/626774 [crash on loading background image]

which may be related to the same problem (ancient xv sources seems to use
XSetWindowBackgroundPixmap), and to

 http://bugs.debian.org/626331 [gnome-settings-daemon doesn't allow to log
into IceWM, LXDE.]

and cc'ing submitters in case they want to add something.

By the way, Just noticed a mail from Sergio Cipolla to #626331 reporting
that for both 'icewmbg' and 'pcmanfm --desktop' seems that using a
background image instead of a background colour also prevents the X
session from crashing.

Regards,

Next time, could you please so kind as to write a few words, or at
least cc maintainers of the package you're reassigning to?

Quoting devref 5.8.3. Bug housekeeping:

 2. If the bug is real but it's caused by another package, just
reassign the bug to the right package. If you don't know which
package it should be reassigned to, you should ask for help on IRC or
on <debian-devel@lists.debian.org>. Please inform the maintainer(s)
of the package you reassign the bug to, for example by Cc:ing the
message that does the reassign to <packagename@packages.debian.org>
and explaining your reasons in that mail. Please note that a simple
reassignment is not e-mailed to the maintainers of the package being
reassigned to, so they won't know about it until they look at a bug

Hi, Cyril

Looking at 2:1.10.2.902-1 changelog.

xorg-server (2:1.10.2.902-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (1.10.3 rc2):
    - DIX: Set backgroundState correctly for root window (Closes: #632134).
  * Drop 20-workaround-36986.diff, fixed upstream.
  * Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.2 (no changes).

This should also fix merged bug reports #626331, #626655, #626774. At
least I can no longer find this problem with icewm-session and icewmbg.

Not yet closing these bug reports in case some of the other submiters still
find problems,

Thanks for fixing this.

Regards,

Agustin

good catch, thanks. I hadn't found time to go through the related bugs
and close them.

I think it's safe to close those, so I'm sending a -done for the first
one, which will close the other ones since they are merged.
