libmtp 1.0.6-5 changed libmtp-runtime from recommended to required.
since then upon rebooting udev/mtp-probe get stuck in an endless loop, 
though the machine works as normal it breaks my lirc setup and the syslog is full of garbage like this:

Removing /lib/udev/mtp-probe or, more cleanly, removing libmtp-runtime and downgrading libmtp8 fixed this bug.
Any clue why this is broken?  I'm suspecting it's a udev issue...
