Is this bug really still unresolved?
There are various guides online showing how to configure DDNS with ISC
bind, that suggests that upstream does support it.
On the other hand, I've tried to follow the instructions from a couple
of those guides and it doesn't actually work - the logs show no evidence
of communication between dhcpd and named. It is working fine for IPv4,
just not IPv6

server does support DDNS updates for IPv6:

configuration is precisely the same as with DHCPv4."
Nonetheless, I still haven't seen it actually work with the package from
wheezy: it may simply be a configuration issue though.
Sebastian, when you say there is a "known" upstream issue, can you
provide a bug reference or other details?

well i can confirm, that DDNS works.
Just a snippet from Syslog:
PTR Jul 4 20:45:23 gw dhcpd: Added reverse map from
1.c.4.f.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.8.7.3.1.8.f.6.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa.
to 0101193a80be01b77724697-ipv6.tuxwave.net.
But i must say that i am not really satisfied with it, so as i would
for example use Parts of the IPv6 Adress leased into the PTR record.
Currently i am using:
ddns-hostname = concat(binary-to-ascii(16, 8, "", option
dhcp6.client-id), "-ipv6");
Which yields for example to:
1.c.4.f PTR 0101193a80be01b77724697-ipv6.tuxwave.net.
But ISC-DHCPv6 allows me not to use the supplied IPv6 Address.
In IPv4 it is like so:
ddns-hostname = concat(binary-to-ascii(10, 8, "-", leased-address),
"-ipv4");
Which yields:
192-168-0-34-ipv4.tuxwave.net
With IPv6 i for example could use the last 64 Bits (Substring of IPv6
Addr), so that it would show like so:
0000-0000-0000-f4c1-ipv6.tuxwave.net
This is what not works. At least at that time i configured it (some
years ago).

Thanks for that link - that provides a much more clear picture - I'll
email the ISC people to see if things have changed.
I'm guessing that the default dhclient with it's default config file in
Debian isn't going to work out of the box with DDNS the way it does with
IPv4. That will be a showstopper for some users.
Have you tried wide-dhcp or any other alternative client and server for
DHCPv6?

- can anybody comment on any alternative permutations (e.g. using the
Windows or Mac OS X client against the dhcpd on Linux)?
- does the dhcpd have to run on the same box as the radvd / default
gateway or are there any other aspects of IPv6 DHCP/DDNS that are unlike
IPv4?
