In Ubuntu, the attached patch was applied to achieve the following:

This package is being prepared to enter main, and it has been requested
that symbol files are added to the library packages for easier tracking
of ABI. It would be appreciated if you were to also include these in
the Debian package.

  * Add symbol files for libconfig8 and libconfig++8, required for
    entering main

Thanks for the patch, but I won't be adding symbol files to libconfig.
I'm not convinced that symbols are all that useful for C++ libraries.
