Subject: audacious: major skipping on VIA 8235 and ALSA
Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2011 00:32:09 -0400
Package: audacious
Version: 2.3-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Audacious skips, frequently, almost an entire second at a time of a track, makin
g it unusable as a music player. This happens with MIDI playback (fluidsynth ba
ckend), local mp3 and Ogg Vorbis files, and even mp3 and ogg streams. Playing those same audio files in mplayer (from the command line with no extra parameters
) worked fine.

Hi Jonathan,

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with audio output. I am the
author of the ALSA plugin and would like to see it "just work" on every
system out there. Unfortunately I have no experience with this
particular sound card. One thing I would suggest is to try a newer
version such as 2.4.4, which fixes problems with some cards.

I found this fixed the issue for me while running Gentoo, and now on Debian
Squeeze it is also working.

msoulier@anton:~$ cat /etc/asound.conf
pcm.via {
  type plug
  slave.pcm "dmix:V8235,0"
}
