Subject: [Debian 6] Installation hangs during network hardware probing
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2011 20:59:41 +0300
Package: installation-reports
Version: 6
Installation of newest stable debian 6 hangs. Expert installation
helps to determine that it hangs during detection of network adapter.
The problem was caused by a Trendnet TEW-423PI pci wifi adapter
(http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/bmrd/view/349933/), known as 01:03.0
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE
802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)
I can query for additional info about the adapter, if required.

The installation just hangs in the very beginning. I tried enabling
and disabling the onboard ethernet controller, but no change.
I have an ASRock p4i65 motherboard (S478, Intel Celeron 1.7) and the
only PCI card in it is the wifi card.

Is it a kernel crash? The installer is stopped?
Can you take a look on what is happeding on the virtual console 4 and give
more details?
/var/log/syslog should also have more details. Feel free to share that file
(gzipped).

I would be interested to hear about this, since it could be a good
source of information on how well the rtl8180 driver works.

Do you still have access to this hardware? What operating system is
it running now, if any?

Curious,
Jonathan

Yes, the problem persists. It can be reproduced at 2 different
computers (S775 C2d E5400 G31 and that S478 old pc).
Both have latest-updated debians (apt-get update && apt-get
dist-upgrade && reboot).
I do have access to the card. I do not work with it, actually I use
cable connections.

addition about the wifi card
Debian just hangs.
After that no keypresses give any results.
I cannot switch to console 4.

The wifi card (with the chip) photo is available at the bugreport earlier.
The screen photo is here: http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/bmrd/view/567443
I tried waiting for 5 minutes, and nothing happened.

Hi,

thanks for the follow up on this.
From the image you provided the latest thing on screen - that is/was
happening - it's gdm3 starting.
By this point network was already setup (7th line from top).

Without the card this doesn't happen?

Can you also test and give feedback with latest dailies [1] from the
future Debian 7.0 (which has a newer kernel) ?

That does not happen without the card installed, surely.
I started bittorent downloading of debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso,
but it does not succeed with the "Requested download is not authorized
for use with this tracker." error.
I will download it from http, burn, run and then report.

Thanks much. Could you attach full output from
"reportbug --template linux-image-$(uname -r)" on one of the machines?

I think there should be no need to test a new installer to try a newer
kernel. The kernel image, initramfs-tools, and linux-base from sid or
squeeze-backports are supposed to work on a squeeze system.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Ping. Are you still interested in pursuing a fix for this bug? If
not, that's fine, but please do let us know so we can plan
accordingly.

Thanks again for your help and patience,

Hi,
your bug has been filed against the "linux-2.6" source package and was filed for
a kernel older than the recently released Debian 7.x / Wheezy with a severity
less than important.

We don't have the ressources to reproduce the complete backlog of all older kernel
bugs, so we're closing this bug for now. If you can reproduce the bug with Debian Wheezy
or a more recent kernel from testing or unstable, please reopen the bug by sending
a mail to control@bugs.debian.org with the following three commands included in the
mail:

reopen BUGNUMBER
reassign BUGNUMBER src:linux
thanks

Cheers,
        Moritz
