Package: amule
Version: 2.2.6+debian0-8
Severity: important
amule keeps quitting after a short time, often before it's reached the
front of any download queues. I've tried runnning it from a terminal
with ulimit -c unlimited but it just exits without any message. A few
times I've noticed that it's eating masses of memory, causing severe
swapping, so presumably it's exiting because it runs out of memory, but
I'm not sure if that's the cause every time.
It seems to be triggered by trying to download several files at once
(more than 10?). On one occasion I was experiencing the crashes with far
fewer downloads but deleting the .aMule directory and restarting it made
it work reliably. But I've just tried deleting everything from .aMule
except my partial downloads (currently 16 of them) and the instability
is persisting.

I can replicate it on one of my system (but not on another, weird)

There is a thread[1] on the upstream forum where the problem seems to
be related to the download limits, and to some bug in wx.
[1] http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=18543
Let's see how it goes, since the current solution seems to be in the
wx libs (so not even a amule bug).
Cheers,

I have the same problem with current stable amule version after upgrading from
lenny. It starts running normally, then after a while it eats up all memory.
Could add a real backtrace, but i didn't get the debugger symbols working.
How do i compile the source package with amule-dbg?
In the GNU Debugger i get this:

Ah, I had a download limit by accident which I didn't actually want, so
hopefully I'll be able to run it without problems for a while. I also
rebuilt the package with debugging enabled and without stripping and ran
it in valgrind. This would sometimes run for hours without crashing,
memory use stabilising somewhere between 1 and 2GB, until I stopped it
manually. The high CPU load, slow response and memory consumption was
too inconvenient though.
I collected some logs etc. I can't find what's causing the memory leaks
and the backtraces show threads dying while waiting, so probably
something else killing them (the system due to memory exhaustion?). But
it does look as if there could be a problem with its use of GSource, so
might it help if I post the logs here, or open a new Debian bug or post
them upstream (reluctant to have to join yet another forum)?

Of course the best way would be to post directly on the upstream
forum, [1] (and linking package) is a good start. If you decide it's
too much of a hassle, than attach logs here but if they're too bug
(>500k) please host them on a website so we can easily grab them
without clutter our mailboxes :)

This problem is fixed (on the system I have that was affected) by
upgrading to the latest version (from experimental): 2.3.1~rc1-1 .
Could you please try that version and let me know?
