Subject: Unmatched dependencies for nvidia-glx, xserver-xorg-core too new
Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2011 15:31:16 -0600
Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 195.36.31-6: amd64
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I am using the current (2011-02-11) version of Debian unstable. Since the last
major upgrade of the xorg xwindow system, the nvidia-glx driver refuses to install
with the following error message

> sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
nvidia-glx : Depends: xorg-video-abi-6.0 but it is not installable or
xserver-xorg-core (< 2:1.7.7) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

This is true for both of my systems, an older notebook and my new desktop, on which
I did a fresh installation of Debian.

Using the free drivers won't work for me, as I need full 3D acceleration for my work.

I hope this can be fixed soon.

Christian

Xorg 1.9 is already supported in the driver package in experimental
(260.xx), please use the packages from experimental until we upload a
newer release to unstable. The 195.xx driver does not support Xorg 1.9
(upstream driver not compatible, not a packaging issue).

Hi Andreas,

Thank you for the pointer. I was able to install the experimental
driver. Unfortunately, that one does not support my video card yet. I
guess I need to wait a bit for nVidia to catch up.

In that case the following experimental pre-release packages might help:

Hi,

an unofficial pre-release of the Debian packages for the NVIDIA driver
260.19.36 is available at

<http://stxxl.ae.cs.uni-frankfurt.de/tmp/262e3a21-dcfc-4852-84b7-44d1cab8ede2-n-g-d-exp/>

These packages haven't been tested thoroughly, yet, but I'm sure you
will tell us when you find problems :-)

Also I can't guarantee that there will be a clean upgrade path from the
pre-release packages to the final ones. So in case of problems, remove
the pre-release packages and re-install the final ones afterwards.

Hi, I was trying to upgrade my unstable/experimental Debian desktop
and found what the subjects says :-)

Trying to upgrade xserver-xorg-core from 2:1.9.4-1 to 2:1.9.4-2 tries
to remove nvidia-glx version 260.19.21-1 since it depends on
xorg-video-abi-8.0 but the new xserver-xorg-core provides
xorg-video-abi-8 so I think that the nvidia-glx package should update
the dependency accordingly.

Thanks for all.

Hi.
I also cannot install nvidia-glx after upgrading xserver-xorg.

I tried installing it from experimental, but apperantly it depends on xserver-
xorg < 1.7.7
OR xorg-video-abi-8.0
OR xorg-video-abi-6.0
but two latter packages are not available.

Hi Andreas.
The nvidia-glx package on 'upcoming experimental' page you linked still
depends on 'xorg-video-abi-8.0' but 'xorg-video-abi-8' is provied by xserver-
xorg-core.

more detail on xorg-video-abi-8.0 vs xorg-video-abi-8

xserver-xorg-core 2:1.9.4-1 Provides both of them, but 2:1.9.4-2
Provides only xorg-video-abi-8:

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.9.4-1
Provides: xorg-input-abi-11, xorg-input-abi-11.0, xorg-video-abi-8, xorg-video-abi-8.0

Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.9.4-2
Provides: xorg-input-abi-11, xorg-video-abi-8

nvidia-glx 260.19.21-1 depends on xorg-video-abi-8.0:

Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 260.19.21-1
Depends: libgl1-nvidia-glx (= 260.19.21-1), libglx-nvidia-alternatives, nvidia-kernel-260.19.21, xorg-video-abi-8.0 | xorg-video-abi-6.0 | xserver-xorg-core (<< 2:1.7.7), libc6 (>= 2.2.5)
Conflicts: fglrx-driver, nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-legacy, nvidia-glx-legacy-173xx, nvidia-glx-legacy-71xx, nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx

so attempting to upgrade xserver-xorg-core to 1.9.4-2 fails to provide
nvidia-glx's required dependancies.

not sure if this bug belongs to nvidia-glx or xserver-xorg-core, but the solution
requires co-ordination between the two packages.

PS: why does nvidia-glx conflict with itself in the Conflicts: line
above? i know it's been in the package since at least 195.36.31 without
causing problems, but it seems an odd conflict to have.

'aptitude why-not nvidia-glx' says that that is the problem (it's wrong,
the problem is the missing dependancy xorg-video-abi-8.0).

This needs to be fixed in the nvidia packages, the new pre-release
packages should fix this.

It's a packaging issue and generated by some variable substitutions - I
want to use packaging scripts with minimal differences for the current
and all the legacy packages to simplify merging changes.

Package: self
Provides: self
Conflicts: self
works fine and is quite common with "real" packages that are also
"virtual" packages.

Eventually you should report that as an aptitude bug.

I don't see your problem:

Package: nvidia-glx
Version: 260.19.36-0~anbe1
Architecture: amd64
Depends: libgl1-nvidia-glx (= 260.19.36-0~anbe1),
libglx-nvidia-alternatives, nvidia-kernel-260.19.36,
xorg-video-abi-8 | xorg-video-abi-6.0 | xserver-xorg-core (<< 2:1.7.7),
libc6 (>= 2.2.5)

If you are asking about the legacy packages, I didn't find time to
update them, yet. They still want -8.0.

The pre-release drivers fixed my dependency problems, but I can't get
multi-head to work with them. I'm using a single card to drive 2
monitors, and as long as I have a "Screen 0" or "Screen 1" in either
device section, xorg bombs out saying "screen 0 deleted because a
matching config section couldn't be found."

I've verified my settings, and that's the only thing that makes a
difference. If I remove the Screen options, I can only bring up a
single monitor.

Does it work if you add two Screen sections? My current configuration in
a similar sort of setup is:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"

    BusID "PCI:4:0:0"
    Screen 1
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"

That's pretty much what mine looks like, except that I'm in a disjoint
setup. No xinerama/dualview. It was working under xorg 1.7 btw,
although it somehow magically got removed, but that's outside of this
scope. I can post my config, but I think I might try adding the
pre-release as a mirror and pull in all the suggests and recommends. I
just pulled down the packages I needed to cover dependencies and
installed them manually.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I hate Xinerama.

I'm probably going to have the same problem that you have, then -- I
haven't upgraded this particular system to 1.7 yet. (So my solution
wasn't a "this works with 1.7 solution," but just a stab in the dark in
the hope that it was something simple.)

What's going to be more run is that my workstation at home is a
trimonitor setup, same problem, so as long as I don't exit X i'll be
fine for now :)

Anyways, I just purged everything I installed manually and am
reinstalling from the repo now. I follow up on the results shortly.

That sounds somewhat similar to 604915, although that one was with
xinerama. I have no idea about a cause though, or whether it's
nvidia-specific.

In case people read these bug threads looking for a work around...

As of about 2011.02.24 (yes, a couple days ago) I was able to get my
nvidia based debian box back up by following these general steps:

1) I removed Experimental from my sources.list file and made sure all my
xserver packages were at the level found in debian unstable.

2) I removed all my nvidia packages.

3) I downloaded from the debian repository pool all the files in the
nvidia directory matching the pattern *260*386*deb (I assume these are
part of the experimental set of nvidia drivers) and manually installed
them. I don't believe nvidia-glx_260.19.21-1_i386.deb will install on
account of dependency issues.

4) I forced the nvidia-glx_260.19.21-1_i386.deb install.

I rebooted and got my debian / nvidia box back.

(Earlier in the week I was able to leave Experimental in my sources.list
file. But xserver-common got updated which lead to other dependency
issues. That's the reason for step 1.)

-good luck

I had the same problem installing nvidia-glx.

I fixed it by using the "equivs" package to create a trivial dummy
package providing: xorg-video-abi-8.0

After that, installing nvidia-glx from experimental went smoothly.

However, I'm seeing terrible performance in Compiz, which I haven't been
able to explain...

Thanks for all your help. I did not want to mess with it too much. I
just waited for the next release of the Beta drivers on nVidia's
website. Driver version 270.26 is working fine now.

Thanks,

     - Added support for the following GPUs: Quadro 2000 D, Quadro 400.
   * New upstream release 260.19.36 (2011-01-21).
     - Updated the NVIDIA kernel module to ensure that all system memory
allocated by it for use with GPUs or within user-space components of the
NVIDIA driver stack is initialized to zero. (Closes: #609338)
A new NVIDIA kernel module option, InitializeSystemMemoryAllocations,
allows administrators to revert to the previous behavior.
     - Fixed a bug that caused X servers version 1.9 and higher to crash when
       color index overlays were enabled.
     - Fixed a bug that caused pixel value 255 to be treated as transparent in
       color index overlays.
     * Fix deadlock in some applications that fork. (Closes: #612998)
   * New upstream release 260.19.29 (2010-12-13).
     - Added support for the following GPUs: GeForce GTX 460 SE,
       GeForce GTX 570, Quadro 5000M, NVS 300.
     - Fixed a bug that caused some OpenGL applications to become
unresponsive for up to a minute on some GPUs when changing
       the resolution or refresh rate.
     - Added support for NVIDIA 3D Vision Pro.
See the "Stereo" X configuration documentation in the README
       for further details.
     - Added a new X configuration option "3DVisionProConfigFile"
to allow user provide a filename which NVIDIA X driver uses
to store 3D Vision Pro configuration settings.
See "Appendix B. X Config Options" in the README for
       more information.
   * Merge 195.36.31-7 (UNRELEASED).
   * Remove NVIDIA_kernel-260.19.34-778465.diff, applied upstream.
   * Update nv-kernel.ids.
   * Detect license changes by comparing debian/copyright with the shipped
     LICENSE during build.
   * Pre-Depend on nvidia-common for interactive (using debconf)
nvidia-installer cleanup. There is a mutual exclusion between using the
     nvidia-installer and the driver packages.
     - Checks for /usr/bin/nvidia-installer and asks the user whether to run
'nvidia-installer --uninstall'. If that fails, offers to just delete
the remaining files. If the user chooses to do the cleanup himself,
installation is blocked as long as nvidia-installer is still found on
       the system. (Closes: #605337, #611705)
     - Adds a pre-install hook for the nvidia-installer, giving a warning to
users running a NVIDIA-Linux-*.run file directly while Debian packages
providing the driver are installed. This hook fails intentionally, but
unfortunately the default choice if the hook failed is to continue
anyway. Therefore the hook tries to kill the nvidia-installer process.
     - Provides a script that checks for conflicting libraries (libGL.so.*.*
remaining from previous usage of the nvidia-installer) and offers to
delete them. The script is intended to be run from postinst. If the
user chooses not to delete them, postinst configure fails as long as the
user has not cleaned up or lets the postinst delete the files.
   * nvidia-glx{,-ia32}.postinst: run the cleanup of conflicting libGL.so.*.*
(Currently the conflicting libraries are moved to
/var/lib/nvidia-backup.XXXXXX instead of deleting them.) (Closes: #606175)
   * Install a dummy file in /usr/lib/nvidia/diversions to ensure it is not
removed by some old maintainer script. Causes trouble if the destination
directory of some diversion is missing and the diverted file is installed
     later on. (Closes: #608625)
   * Add patch nvidia-kernel-compat-2.6.38.patch to fix build with 2.6.38-rc
     kernels. (Closes: #613798)
   * Depend on xorg-video-abi-8 without minor version (Closes: #612956) and
provide xorg-driver-video to match what Xorg 1.9 provides and expects.
   * Add script build-module-packages.sh to the documentation of the
nvidia-kernel-source package, uses module-assistant to do a quick build of
the modules for all installed linux-headers.
   * Prevent concurrent installation of mismatching upstream versions of
     libgl1-nvidia-glx and libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32. (Closes: #614040)
   * Catch module-assistant failures after nvidia-kernel-source updates without
running 'module-assistant clean nvidia'. Only works if the old version
already contained this change and a module was built.
   * Use dpkg-parsechangelog to extract the upstream version number from
     debian/changelog, simplifying debian/rules.defs even more.
   * Update lintian-overrides to work with lintian 2.5.0.
   * Add patch fix-typos.patch to fix a typo in the module (found by lintian).
   * Drop Conflicts: binutils-gold, the problem is no longer reproducible with
     binutils-gold 2.21.0.20110302-2 and driver 260.19.44 or 195.36.31, so
either the driver or gold was fixed inbetween. (See #581336)
 .
   [ Russ Allbery ]
   * Readd the Lintian overrides for the old embedded library tags, since
part of the ftp-master verification process seems to be using an older
     Lintian.
