Subject: live-boot: unionfs-fuse root does not work
Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2011 15:28:14 +0100
Package: live-boot
Version: 3.0~a14-1+git
Severity: normal

I was testing my changes to l-b and found that unionfs-fuse is broken to
start with.

The live script tries to raise the number of available file descriptors
for unionfs-fuse which is a bashism as reported by the package build
scripts and does not work but the live script continues anyway.

with break=bottom or break=init I see fully functional system in /root
However, initscripts complain about readonly filesystem and fail.

we've never had (nor advertised) unionfs-fuse support. it was just
merged in from casper with some bugfixes on top of it. since apparently
we'll get aufs for 2.6.37, and the road for the future is unionmount, i
wouldn't invest my time in fixing unionfs-fuse support, however, patches
are of course welcome.

Regards,
Daniel

I tried a few more things with unionfs-fuse.

First I tried break=init or init=bin/sh.

At both points the system still appears functional but initscripts fail
after that. I also found that if I type

touch test
exec /sbin/init

at the prompt of the "init" shell the system boots but it does not if I
script this from break=bottom or type only exec /sbin/init. This looks
like a race somewhere.

When the initscripts fail complaining about readonly filesystem I can
still log in after some minuts if my root account is enabled in the
image. fuse is still running and the union is actually writable but some
files visible in /live/cow are not in / and the other way around.

Looks like unionfs-fuse cannot take the beating from parallel
initscripts, it's just too flaky. Not much debian-live can do about
this.

thanks for your tests. this somewhat reconfirms what we found out
earlier, that unionfs-fuse is not nearly usable itself, and that we need
either aufs or unionmount support in the kernel.

At the end of march I send patches fixing #612913 to the debian-live
mailinglist. Looks like my email was forgotten. This took me some time
to figure out, maybe you could finally merge that stuff (or tell me how
to improve it)?

Here is the mail in question:

  http://lists.debian.org/debian-live/2011/03/msg00269.html

The Git-branch with my fixes is at:

  https://github.com/dvdkhlng/live-boot/

also have look the email thread for more info.

cheers,

David

given that in the last couple of years the situation with having aufs
modules for the current kernels has de-escalated (due to inclusion of
aufs in the main linux kernel packages within debian, rather than
oot-modules), the main reason to support unionfs-fuse within live-boot
is no longer necessary (to have a proper 'fallback' in place when aufs
support for the kernel is not yet available).

also given that unionfs-fuse offers no other advantage over aufs, but in
fact has several disadvantages (most prominently, it's dead slow), i do
not see any reason to work on having unionfs-fuse support in live-boot
myself. however, as it's always desirable to support as many use cases
as possible, if you provide patches to make it work, we'll happily apply
them.

in the meanwhile, i'm closing this bug, feel free to reopen with patches
at any time.
