Hi.

The PEAR README seems to be in /usr/share/doc/php5-common/PEAR/PEAR/README. However, one would expect that per Debian packaging conventions, it is in /usr/share/doc/php-pear/README.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

That would break the PEAR installation which lists LICENSE and README
files installed as /usr/share/php/doc/PEAR/{LICENSE,README} and
/usr/share/php/doc is symlinked to /usr/share/doc/php5-common/PEAR/.
In another words the PEAR (first) directory includes whatever pear
install throws into it.

And I don't think it's worth creating another symlink (from PEAR/PEAR
-> PEAR) just for purity.

What's the problem if PEAR's LICENSE and README aren't where PEAR
expects them ?

We are maintaining a *distribution* first, so its policy should come
first, before PEAR's or I don't understand things in the right way...

I'd object to the wontfix but don't want to be rude by changing it
before I heard your arguments ;) ... and I'm not yet DD to NMU in any
case ;)

Please, can you enlighten me ?

Thanks in advance.

Also you should probably read Developers Reference as well, especially
the NMU section...

http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/pkgs.html#nmu

P.S.: I don't consider threatening with NMU in case of disagreement as
funny even though I see the smiley.

close 612286
thank you

> Please, can you enlighten me ?

Debian Policy is your friend...

But not to sound RTFMish... here's the relevant part:

--cut here--
12.3 Additional documentation

Any additional documentation that comes with the package may be
installed at the discretion of the package maintainer.

[...]

It is often a good idea to put text information files (READMEs,
changelogs, and so forth) that come with the source package in
/usr/share/doc/package in the binary package. However, you don't need
to install the instructions for building and installing the package,
of course!
--cut here--

And our maintainer discretion is to keep the same structure as PEAR
documentation to not make things complicated. Hence closing the bug,
no reason to keep it open.

Olivier, I know you're trying to help, but such nitpicking in a
situation when we have ~125 open bugs on src:php5 including various
segfaults in not really helping. If you have a time, it would be much
better if you could do some little bug maintenance like retesting old
bugs with php in stable, pinging old bugs if the submitter can still
reproduce the problem, etc., etc...

I was just thinking that maybe one could have responded with something
like : "if you don't like it this way, feel free to fix it yourself",
which I couldn't have done as I am no DD.

Anyway, enough wasting everyone's time.

Thanks for your kind answers.

Excuse me Olivier but you are just plain wrong with
this statement. Even not being a DD, you can
download any Git repo from alioth and prepare
patches. As you are part of the php-pkg group on
alioth, you have write access too, so you could
(for example) create your own branch and ask others
to have a look, and do a "git merge olivier-branch"
(or also, pull from any URL you'd like).

In short: you CAN fix it yourself, but you wont be
able to upload without asking others.

Thomas
