Subject: installation-reports: D510MO-mainboard - where to find missing rtl81168d-1.fw?
Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2011 05:48:39 +0100
Package: installation-reports
Severity: grave

Boot method: CD
Image version: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/squeeze_di_rc1/i386/iso-cd/debian-sq-di-rc1-i386-netinst.iso

When running the installer on a D510MO-mainboard computer the non-free
driver rtl81168d-1.fw is requested. The driver is not provided in the
firmware tarball packages. Google shows no hits for this file name,
but some postings point to r8168-8.020.00.tar.bz on the Realtek site,
but of course I cannot compile the driver on an uninstalled system :-(

Regards

thanks for your report. At first glance, that's just an important (or
less?) bug, adjusting severity accordingly.

Ok. It is not clear for me which level of severity is appropriate, but
please note that at the moment the only way out is to install Ubuntu
(what I have actually done).

Thanks for mentioning it. Now I guess somebody might be able to see
whether that file can be fetched from somewhere and possibly included
in Debian as well.

And that would probably be the firmware-linux-nonfree maintainer(s).

Hello,

is there any progress on this issue? The fix for bug 609538 requires the
firmware files for r8169 which seems to be quite similar to this bug.

Regards,
Eduard.

Version: 0.28

rtl8168d-1.fw was added to the firmware-realtek package in version 0.28.
Realtek's official firmware format is different from the version I
proposed to use, so it requires a driver update which will be included
in Debian 6.0.2.

Please note that the firmware file only provides a bug fix for the
network controller. In many cases, the controller and the driver will
work correctly without it.

Ben.
