Hi,

As you can see in the Kernel logs, I've some issues with my Marvell ethernet controller (88E8053), which is managed with the 'sky2' module. These stability issues appear randomly and always with this message in syslog : "ethX: hw csum failures."

I did several tests with large/default MTU but there is no improvement !

Hi,

I still have this problem with the sky2 module, but in recent days,
this line appears in syslog (which did not appear before):

[21495.838200] sky2 0000:03:00.0: eth1: receive checksum problem (status = 0xe649e641)

If you need more information, please let me know.

Vincent

Hi,

Well, I just realized that I didn't update this bug report although
there is an obvious workaround to this failure,
which is to simply disable rx checksumming (ethtool -K $IFACE rx off).
So sorry about that :-)

BTW it seems that I'm not the only one to be affected by this bug [1],
and upstream seems to think that it's not
a driver bug, but rather a bios or a firmware failure (see comment 19 in
[1]).

Cheers,
Vincent

This rang a bell for me, and indeed there has been a similar report
not too long ago: [1]

But it says that 2.6.32-38 works. Odd.

What kernel are you using these days? Would you be able to try a 3.y
kernel from sid (which would allow us to get help from upstream)? The
only packages from outside squeeze that should be required for this
aside from linux-image-foo itself are linux-base and initramfs-tools.

Thanks for the pointers.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

I'm not convinced that is the same issue although the log messages are
quite similar.
Please Antti, could you test the last Debian kernel (3.1.1-1) and see if
disabling rx
checksumming fix your issue (ethtool -K ethX rx off).

I use the last squeeze kernel (2.6.32-39), but I tried 3.1.1-1 and there
is no improvement,
I create a script which download in a loop a Debian netinstall iso and
sadly the failure appeared
after the tenth iteration:

[15302.816026] sky2 0000:03:00.0: eth1: hung mac 124:66 fifo 195
(50:45), follow by a lot of
[15024.816308] sky2 0000:03:00.0: eth1: rx error, status 0x7ffc0001
length 1004 messages.

But what has changed with this kernel version is that the system freeze
(X, keyboard, etc.), so
I'll 'echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq' in order to retrieve the control
of the system and collect some useful information (dmesg, etc.).

Ok, so that might confirm that you are affected by a completely
different problem although
the log message are almost identical.

Problem still persists with the latest kernel and disabling checksumming
does not fix the issue.

Yes, thanks much.

There have been some fixes to the sky2 driver upstream recently.
Please try v3.2-rc3 or later once it hits experimental (or sooner, if
you have time to build from source). If it exhibits the same problem,
please send a summary upstream (that means Stephen Hemminger
<shemminger@vyatta.com>, netdev@vger.kernel.org, and
linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org), cc-ing me or this bug log so we can
track it.

Regards,
Jonathan

I'll clone Linus's tree probably tomorrow or this week-end, and if I
still have
issues I'll ping upstream.

Hi Jonathan,

I found some spare time to clone Linus's tree and build v3.2-rc3, but
unfortunately
those failures are still present, therefore I'll contact upstream this
weekend.

Hi,

[reference: http://bugs.debian.org/609994]

I have a Marvell ethernet controller which presents some failures when
'rx checksumming' is enabled,
here is the model:

$ lspci -vvs 03:00.0
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E
Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Marvell 88E8053
Gigabit Ethernet Controller (MSI)
        Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop-
ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+
        Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort-

Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 44
        Region 0: Memory at fdbfc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
        Region 2: I/O ports at 7c00 [size=256]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fda00000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: sky2

At first I thought it was due to the MTU size, so I tested different
values but unfortunately without positive effect.
Overall this issue appears randomly when the incoming traffic is high. I
tested 2.6.32, 3.1.1, and 3.2-rc3, sadly
all are affected. Finally, the only way to avoid those failures is to
disabled 'rx checksumming' (ethtool -K ethX rx off).

Here is the stack trace:

This isn't really a hardware checksum failure.
Your problem is deeper than that. The internal parts of the chip are not
communicating correctly. The "hung mac" is a problem only occurs if the PCI
is really stuck. There may be a timing issue on your motherboard, or the BIOS
isn't setting up the device properly. The timing then gets messed up between
the end of frame status and the PCI shared memory region. Turning checksum
off masks the problem, but the status is probably still corrupt.

In either case the problem is beyond the ability of the driver to fix or workaround.
Your best bet is to see if there is a BIOS update, or replace the hardware.

IMO, turning checksum off does more than masking the problem because it
prevents the
connection to stop working or even freeze the system.

Sadly the last BIOS update was in 2006, so I don't think I can rely on
the manufacturer.
But again, deactivate the capability of checksum by NIC hardware makes
the interface stable since March.

Vincent

You wrote before that v3.2-rc3 didn't work, so in order not to forget, I'm
marking 3.2-rc4 as affected.

Do you know anyone with the same hardware or with an operating system that
uses a different driver, that could help to rule out a hardware problem?

If it is a hardware problem but a common one, it could still be worth working
around (and of course if it is not a hardware problem, upstream might be more
likely to give advice). Otherwise, your best bet might be to keep working
around it locally.

Sorry for the trouble,
Jonathan

3.2.1-2 is affected as well, so I'm marking it accordingly.

Unfortunately there is no one around me with this network controller,
but I did some test on a
distribution based on a derivative of OS/Net kernel (OpenIndiana), and I
couldn't reproduce the
bug since the 'yge' driver doesn't support hardware checksum calculation.

Therefore I will try with FreeBSD (or a derivative), which use the 'msk'
driver which support that feature.
By the way, do you know if there is a Debian GNU/kFreeBSD live project?

I believe there was one long ago that is not maintained any more. But the
debian-installer environment might be close enough, and that is maintained.

Thanks for your work,
Jonathan
