Subject: embedding PDF readers in chromium steals mouse pointer and lock X session
Date: Fri, 07 Jan 2011 13:53:15 +0100
Package: mozplugger
Version: 1.14.2-1
Severity: important

In my quest to decent PDF support with chromium, I gave mozplugger a try. I've
tried it with both xpdf and evince. In both cases, the PDF opens fine within
the browser, but as soon as I click into the embedded window I completely lose
control of my X session. I've no technical explanation to offer, but the
feeling is that the mouse, as other X events, are trapped into that window and
it is no longer possible to interact with what is outside that window. That
includes buttons that are supposedly used only by the window manager
(e.g. Mod4), implying that I can't even switch workspace.

The only "solution" is then to switch to console mode and kill the child
process of mozplugger (either 'xpdf' or 'evince' in my tests).

I'm using awesome as a window manager within a GNOME session, I'm not sure if
either of the two plays a role in the bug.

Thanks a lot for maintaining mozplugger,
Cheers.

Stefano,

few minutes ago I uploaded in experimental a new mozplugger revision
with debug support enabled, please grab it and follow these steps to
get a detailed debug log:

 1) Close all browsers
 2) mkdir ~/tmp
 3) Re-open chromium

The log file will appeared in ~/tmp/mozdebug, could you attach that
file in the upstream's bugreport? [1]

Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this bug. Like all other reporters I am running awesome
(3.4.11-1), but unlike others I can reproduce it with iceweasel
(8.0.-3+b1). Also when I kill the pdf viewer (xpdf 3.02-21) from a linux
vt, the grabbing of input events stops.

Hope this helps

Helmut

As Wheezy is frozen and we have a better idea of which software versions
will ship with it, I gotta ask:

Does this issue still warrant the current severity level it has?

Here, with Iceweasel 10 and Evince 3.4, I don't notice these symptoms, so
I wonder if the severity should perhaps be lowered or the bug closed?
