Subject: xrdp: Incorrect graphic when using rdesktop

Package: xrdp
Version: 0.5.0~20100303cvs-6
Severity: important
User: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
UserTags: debian-edu

In Debian Edu, we plan to provide xrdp on our thin clients for
Squeeze. But the visual presentation of xrdp in rdesktop seem to be
incorrect, and this make me unsure if xrdp work as it should with
Windows clients.

I tested with the latest Debian Edu/Squeeze installation, logged in
with a freshly made user using rdesktop version 1.6.0-3, and got the
drawing errors shown in the attached screen shot. The K menu was not
showing the text it was supposed to show (no text, only icons), and
the desktop was generally useless.

I logged in using 'rdesktop localhost' and provided username and
password, in case that have anything to do with the problem. Is there
something wrong with the setup? We use the default package setup.
Should we use a different VNC server package than vnc4server?

Only setting the severity to important, assuming xrdp work for
someone. If this incorrect graphic affect everyone, I believe the
issue would be release critical.

Hi Petter!

vnc4server seems to be the best VNC server for xrdp. Several problems have
been reported with other VNC servers. Check that "Xvnc" is a (indirect)
symlink to vnc4server.

In KDE, could you try to disable any visual effects? The misdrawed areas
seem to be the ones using transparency.

You can also check if the problem comes from vnc4server or from xrdp by
running vnc4server by hand and connect to it using a regular VNC client.
Look in the process list to check what arguments you should use to launch
Xvnc. If you succeed in reproducing the problem this way, you can try with
a different depth (you can also try to tell rdesktop to use a different
depth with "-a").

I discovered the same behaviour of xrdp as Petter explained.
It doesn't matter if you connect from a WindowsXP machine or a Debian machine
with rdesktop, the effects are the same.
I tried to use rdesktop with different options and parameters to get it solved or
even better but dit doesn't work in any case.
I can remember that it was perfekt the first time when I tried it within Debian-Edu
and was surprised that it gives such worse drawings when I tried it on 3th Dec. the last time.
Now, I tried it again on pure Debian and it is the same as on debian-Edu.
Following the hints from Vincent Bernat I can't get it working better.
To configure KDE is not an option for the targetted usage.

Compositing is disabled because it is correctly detected as not
supported by the X server.

When running vnc4server manually (Xvnc :10 1024x768 -depth 24 -bs -ac
-nolisten tcp -rfbauth /root/.vnc/passwd), I get the same problem when
connecting with a VNC client. It seems that vnc4server is not able to
provide an appropriate X server for a KDE desktop.

I reaffect this bug to vnc4server package.

Hi Jurgen

Thanks for informing about this issue. I was not even aware of it
as the bug was re-assigned to vnc4server package and when bugs
are re-assigned the new package maintainer is not informed automatically.

vnc4 is a very old piece of code dating from Xfree86 version 4 days.
Many years has passed since then and new functionality has been introduced
in X since then. I guess the rendering modes that KDE requires is one of
them.

The obvious solution would be to build vnc against the latest version
of X, but unfortunatly it does not work. I have worked many days on trying
to solve that but it is simply not possible.

One of the main reasons for this is that this package is not maintained
upstream anymore. Since quite many years back. In order to solve this
I would essentially need to re-write most of vnc in order to make it work
with some later X version and that is simply too much work.

Luckily for you there are some good forks of vnc that should be newer.
I guess tigervnc is a version that would work. This version is not
a part of Debian but there are packages available at TigerVNC
homepage.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Ola Lundqvist,

I tested the TigerVNC and it works so far.
A screenshot is attached.
Unfortunatly it is not in debian.

Isn't there any chance to get a vncserver in squeeze working with KDE4
to be integrated in Debian Edu?

Hi Jurgen

Sure it is possible, but then someone need to help me. All the VNC
packages are up for adoption as I lack time to maintain them properly.

Yaroslav have done a good work on the tigervnc packaging but I have
not yet had the time to check the status. It is on my todo list.

Clarification-I have done no work toward packaging - just using it and also reporting successful operation

Ah yes that is right. It was one of the things to check how the work
is going. Now I see that you had just reported successful use and
I do not need to check further. Thanks!
