  Version         : 0.0.6
  Upstream Author : Nathaniel Smith <njs@pobox.com>
* URL             : http://code.google.com/p/partiwm/
* License         : GPL-2

The upstream tarball consists of three conceptually-independent
projects:

parti: tabbing/tiling (one might say "partitioning") window manager. Its
goal is to bring this superior window management interface to modern,
mainstream desktop environments.

xpra: "X Persistent Remote Applications" -- think 'screen for X'.

wimpiggy: A library for writing window managers, used by parti & xpra.

Perhaps it is too early to package it?

It has been in Ubuntu since April 2009, and I (and my colleagues at
work) find the xpra utility very useful.

Hi,

I tested xpra briefly in the hope that it could replace VNC. However,
I hit serious problems with keyboard layouts. Have you been able to
use non-US keyboard layouts?

that alone doesn't qualify anything to be up to the quality needed to

As mentioned in the ITP, the tarball consists of three parts:

* parti: the window manager that is not usable according to upstream
  website. I haven't tried it actually, since my main interest is in the
  xpra tool.
* xpra: a tool to detach/reattach running X programs, think of it as
  'screen' utility but for X. Yet unlike VNC, the applications are
  "rootless". This tool is the reason I am interested in making the
  package available in Debian, it is usable, me & my colleagues use it
  at work. Our use case is that we run some GUI CAD tools at work that
  may take some long time, so we run those through an xpra session, then
  we can check the simulation/synthesis when we get back home (over a
  VPN connection), without getting sluggish response that you get when
  using VNC.
* wimpiggy: a library used by the above tools.

Hi,

There is/was a previous ITP for parti. Please see #569203.

IMO, the parti window manager is not ready to be used by end
users. However, xpra is very usable but it has some issues
with keyboard management. I use this tool ocassionally
without issues.

Anyway, the previous ITP only provides two binary packages
(parti and python-wimpiggy). If there is any interest in
Debian to upload this package I don't really care if this is
maintained under collab-maint or PAPT but I would like to be
involved as co-maintainer.

I think as next step to have this available in Debian, we
should contact upstream to know their plans about the future
of this software.

Cheers,

I'm terribly sorry, yet I did search the wnpp bugs today before I filed
the ITP. I was searching for parti-all though, so I missed your ITP.

My main interest is xpra indeed.

I've done some commits into PAPT SVN repository [1], I see that you &
Michael Schutte some work in git [2]. Although I prefer git over SVN,
yet I think it's better to have it maintained under PAPT.

I have a question, is this:

python make_constants_pxi.py wimpiggy/lowlevel/constants.txt wimpiggy/lowlevel/constants.pxi

really necessary ? I know that setup.py mentions it in the comments, yet
the Ubuntu package didn't run that, yet the build is successful and the
package works.

No problem. It's also my bad for not using the name provided by upstream.

No problem. I think there is a better chance of getting
a sponsor through PAPT. I will join to PAPT since I'm only
a member of DPMT.

That line is not necessary. I looked more closely at that python
invocation and it doesn't do anything. It can safely be removed.
