Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Source: gucharmap
Version: 1:2.30.3-1
Justification: Policy 2.2.1
Severity: serious
The source package for gucharmap contains 7 automatically generated files:
gucharmap/unicode-blocks.h
gucharmap/unicode-categories.h
gucharmap/unicode-names.h
gucharmap/unicode-nameslist.h
gucharmap/unicode-scripts.h
gucharmap/unicode-unihan.h
gucharmap/unicode-versions.h
Each of these files contains the following header, making reference to a
script called "gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl":
/* THIS IS A GENERATED FILE. CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN. */
/* Generated by ./gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl */
/* Generated from UCD version 5.2.0 */
I was trying to add support for the new Indian Rupee Symbol (U+20B9), but
the gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl script and the Unicode Character Database,
which form part of gucharmap's source code, were missing from the Debian
source package.
I've marked this bug with a severity of "serious", since it violates the
DFSG requirement that a program include source code, as well as the GPL
requirement that the program be accompanied with its complete corresponding
source code ("the preferred form of the work for making modifications to
it").
My suggestion for fixing this bug is as follows:
1. Include gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl in the gucharmap package;
2. Add unicode-data to the build-dependencies of gucharmap; and
3. Run gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl as part of the build process, using
the UCD from the unicode-data package.
There is some information at http://bugs.debian.org/318304 that may be
helpful in fixing this bug.
Regards,
- Dwayne

The perl script looks like it was omitted from the tarballs. For the
Unicode tables, this is of course intentional, since that would make
8 MB more data just for them.

Patches are welcome; as for myself, I have more interesting things to
do. I already tried to do this kind of things to “auto-generated” files
in GTK+, and it turned out to be a disaster to implement, because you
need a specific version of the source files if you want to be sure there
is no side effect.

thanks
The script needed for this is actually shipped in the current upstream
versions of gucharmap, so we just need to tweak it a litle bit for use with
the unicode-data package and run it at build time. The attached patch
addresses this.
I'm uploading this patch as an NMU to DELAYED/2-days.
Thanks,

Thanks for the patch, Steve.
An odd thing I noticed, is that gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl is run twice:
configure/libgucharmap-2-90-dev::
cd gucharmap && ./gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl ...
It is run after ./configure, but apparently it is run a second time just
before make install?
It also seems to modify files (unicode-unihan.h) which are not properly
cleaned up and would end up in a debdiff if built twice in a row.
If you can have a look at this, this would be great.
Otherwise I will have try to fix this myself.
Cheers,
Michael

From a cursory glance, we might want to clean up gucharmap/unicode-* on
clean::
rm -f gucharmap/unicode-*
We could also use
clean::
grep -l "Generated by ./gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl" gucharmap/* | xargs rm

I noticed this as well, I have no idea why this is happening.

They're cleaned up via debian/clean:
diff -Nru gucharmap-3.4.1.1/debian/clean gucharmap-3.4.1.1/debian/clean
--- gucharmap-3.4.1.1/debian/clean 1970-01-01 00:00:00.000000000 +0000

+gucharmap/unicode-*.h
Removing the file in the clean target via dh_clean will cause it to be
automatically excluded from the diff.

Seems we have to use a stamp file, so I'll probably change that to
something like that:
post-patches:: debian/stamp-gen-unicode-tables
debian/stamp-gen-unicode-tables:
cd gucharmap && ./gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl $(UNICODE_DATA_VERSION)
/usr/share/unicode
touch debian/stamp-gen-unicode-tables
clean::
rm -f debian/stamp-gen-unicode-tables

Ah, I apparently missed that file. I was only looking at the clean::
rule in debian/rules.

* debian/patches/unicode-source-generation.patch: compatibility with
the unicode-data package.
* debian/rules, debian/clean, debian/control: build-depend on unicode-data
and generate our unicode header files at package build time, to ensure
that we actually can. Closes: #603405.

[ Michael Biebl ]
* Use a stamp file to avoid running gen-guch-unicode-tables.pl twice.
* Point Vcs-* to unstable branch.
* Drop explicit Build-Depends on gir1.2-pango-1.0 and gir1.2-gtk-3.0.
* Drop debian/patches/spelling_fixes.patch since we re-generate
gucharmap/unicode-*.h during build, so patching the pre-generated file is
pointless. This spelling fix needs to go into unicode-data. (See #677896)
