I've installed the following packages an lenny, which are working well on
other maschines.

# dpkg -l | grep xen | grep bpo

ii xenstore-utils 4.0.1-1~bpo50+1 Xenstore utilities for Xen

xen[1] and xen-common[2] are rebuild on lenny without any changes from
testing.

On an HP DL160G6 (with Adaptec 5405 and additional Intel PRO/1000 PT nic
(82571EB)) the bootprocess hangs at /etc/rcS.d/S03udev and OOPS (see attached
xen_boot.png), in syslog I see the following (more detailed in
xen_startup.log):

I don’t have an exact way to get the system proceed from there … usually I
need to wait some seconds and pressing ^C after a while will get the box up.

Booting linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.5-686 works without any issue anyways, so it
seems xen related in some ways.

Many thanks, Jan.

Hi there,

today I updated to linux-image-2.6.32-bpo.5-xen-686 2.6.32-28~bpo50+1 and

Please can you log information about the state of tasks by running:

echo t > /proc/sysrq-trigger

then send the messages for the modprobe tasks.

I guess it should be found in the syslog.

mordor:~# echo t > /proc/sysrq-trigger
mordor:~# grep modprobe /var/log/syslog

But it seems not tobe found there.

It is probably filtered out of syslog because it has a low priority
level. 'dmesg' should show you all the kernel log buffer.

attached you can find the corresponding part of the modprobes of the sysreq
show state and the part of the boot dmesg where the oops occures. Please
notice, that there is a huge time gap before mounting the swap. That's likely
the part of booting, where i have the troubles ... I have also attached a
screenshot of that part. Like you can see, there is a ^C needed to proceed at
that part.
I also noticed, that with latest bpo kernel the system doesn't reboot ...
there is just a "restarting system ... " printed but it's not really rebooting
... just a hit on the reset button helps.

Many thanks, Jan.

Module loading is serialised by a lock. Because the 'oops' occurs
during module loading, the locks is never released and no more modules
can be loaded. So we don't need to worry about that - it's just a
symptom of the initial 'oops'.

The 'oops' itself appears to be due to using ACPI to get CPU
information. This is incorrect behaviour because even for dom0 the CPUs
are virtualised by Xen. This might be the same as bug #603632; please
try the workarounds listed there.

I think this is bug #605448.

I tried the following combinations without any success:

Thanks for the report.

I suspect that this issue will be resolved by this commit from upstream:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/jeremy/xen.git;a=commit;h=68320323a51c2378aca433c76157d9e66104ff1e

I can do a build with this patch against squeeze/sid for test purposes
but it looks like you are running a .bpo package. Are you able to test
with a kernel built against squeeze/sid?

(for my own future reference the interesting threads on xen-devel are:
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2010-04/msg00907.html
http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2010-04/msg01101.html
and:

http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2010-09/msg00877.html
but mostly:

Hmm ... As the system runs lenny and is hosted in a colo, I would say that
could be a problem. I can even try to install the package via "dpkg -i", but I
don't know if that works.
At least I would try it, as I'm able to powercycle the box, if there is any
problem.
If the squeeze kernel doesn't work, maybe a patch against 2.6.32-28 could be
applied to the source of the bpo kernel and I'm trying to rebuild it.

Many thanks, Jan.

Hmm, it might, you may need to pull in a new linux-base .deb too etc.
I'm not sure about any other dependencies arising from building against
squeeze though, but dpkg will tell you about them and you can decide how
you feel about whatever it wants to pull in.

I think that if dpkg is happy with the dependencies etc then the actual
kernel will work fine.

If you are comfortable doing this then I think that would be best.

I've attached the patch which I am building against 2.6.32-27.

I guess there are howtos on google on rebuilding the official kernel
packages with extra patches (or maybe you already know) but briefly:

The important bit is
debian/patches/features/all/xen/xen-acpi-Add-cpu-hotplug-support.patch
plus the addition to debian/patches/series/27+acpi1-extra. The name of
the series file needs to match the revision you give in
debian/changelog, e.g. if you build 2.6.32-28.bpo+acpi1 then you need to
call (or append to) the file debian/patches/series/28.bpo+acpi1-extra.

I also edited debian/config/defines to only build the normal and Xen
flavours to save time.

Most of the rest of the debdiff is autogenerated by "./debian/rules
debian/control"

many thanks. This patch fixes the oops (for me).
But there seems to be some other problems related to xen, as these problems
doesn't occure with the bigmem flavor.
The System hangs (until pressing some keys) in /etc/rcS.d/S03udev (see
attached screenshot). This problem seems happen since I switched over to the
backports kernel some time ago.

With kind regards, Jan.

Great, I'll add it to the kernel then. Thanks for testing.

This is probably worthy of a new bug report.

Might be something like
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600064 have you got TXT
enabled in your BIOS?

Please ensure you are running the latest hypervisor and kernel from bpo
and that they are reasonably up to date WRT what's in Squeeze (or
actually run Squeeze of course!)
