Package: ltsp-server-standalone
Version: 5.2.4-2
Severity: normal
Tags: squeeze
package ltsp-server-standalone has dependencies:
...
- nbd-server (>= 1:2.9.6-2)
- nfs-kernel-server
...
by this dependencies is not possible uninstall the NFS server if NBD
image is used as root for clients (and then NFS server becomes
useless). IMHO this must be in form:
- nbd-server (>= 1:2.9.6-2)
- nfs-kernel-server | nbd-server
The LTSP server works with NBD root and without both (NFS and portmap)
services (stopped and disabled). But i have two unused services in my
system for now. IMHO, the maintainers opinion about using the NFS/NBD
must no touch the users option which solution is best for their
environment.
Please raise severity, if this is policy violation (i don't know), to
prevent these dependencies go to squeeze...

ltsp-server-standalone includes all the services for the LTSP *defaults* to
work correctly.
for a more fine-tuned environment, you should only install ltsp-server and the
relevent services you want, and leave ltsp-server-standalone un-installed.
this is the reason why there are two packages.

thanks for the report, but we're probably going to have differing opinions
here.

it's a little more complicated with nbd-server, as it serves two functions. it
depends on nbd-server for the NBD swap support; the ability to use NBD root
support is an extra feature. if the dependency was:
nfs-kernel-server | nbd-server, nbd-server
then it would only install nbd-server and the defaults (NFS root) would break.
if the dependency was:
nfs-kernel-server | nbd-server
then nbd swap support would get left out by default.
i'd rather include too much, than risk including too little.

all the more important to include all the dependencies needed by default,
rather than allowing for the possibility to shoot themselves in the foot by
leaving out an important service.
NBD support on Debian currently requires an experienced administrator willing
to test and experiment with the non-default configuration.

If this is true (i don't know), then my suggestion is bad.

both are wrong ;-)

yes, you are right

and what about using NBD in Ubuntu? I mean, is there difference about
using (and then testing) NBD under Ubuntu (where ltsp-server-standalone
not depends on NFS) and using it under Debian? Maybe this question is
out of this bugreport, but can be interested by other Debian LTSP users.

it is a simple matter of defaults.
Ubuntu defaults to NBD, and thus doesn't require NFS, and NFS support requires
manual configuration and is less well tested on Ubuntu, simply because it is
not the default.
Debian defaults to NFS, and NBD is less tested and requires more manual
configuration. (interestingly enough, Debian LTSP supports more options for NBD
root than Ubuntu)

Since LTSP in debian now defaults to using NBD, and nfs-kernel-server is
removed from the dependencies, this bug is essentially resolved.
