its probably not good to mix the backports virtualbox-ose package with
the unstable virtualbox-ose-dkms package. can you try to get that into
a consistent state?

also, what are the output of "sudo dkms status" and
"ls /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-ose"?

thanks,
mike

Generally I try to use a stable virtualbox-ose and whatever module
builds with my kernel.

Virtualbox does not require the exact same version of kernel module
installed so I guess it's OK so long as the version is similar.

Also upgrading virtualbox to the unstable version did not resolve the issue.

3.0.12	kernel-2.6.36-rc4-r600fence-netpollirq-smbinit-amd64-x86_64
3.2.8

before reinstalling virtualbox-ose-dkms I had:

3.0.12	3.2.8 kernel-2.6.36-rc3-r600fence-amd64-x86_64

Thanks

there may have been a bug in the virtualbox package at some point that
left the 3.0.12 files lying around on your system. you can manually
remove those with:

  $ sudo dkms remove -m virtualbox-ose -v 3.0.12 --all

best wishes,

Yes, looks so.

Still dkms could handle the issue more gracefully and still install
the new virtualbox-ose on kernel install.

Thanks

It does not work which may be the reason the files were left behind:

dkms remove -m virtualbox-ose -v 3.0.12 --all
dkms.conf: Error! No 'DEST_MODULE_LOCATION' directive specified.
dkms.conf: Error! No 'PACKAGE_NAME' directive specified.
dkms.conf: Error! No 'PACKAGE_VERSION' directive specified.

Error! Bad conf file.
File: /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-ose/3.0.12/source/dkms.conf does not represent
a valid dkms.conf file.

Thanks

Michal

ok, so somehow your vbox 3.0.12 dkms.conf got messed up. to fix that,
you can manually remove the /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-ose/3.0.12 folder.

you probably need to do a "dkms add" once you've cleaned up the broken
3.0.12. or you can just reinstall the virtualbox dkms package.
