There's a list of standard icon names at
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html#names

If the icon theme miss icons, they'll be inherited from another theme,
or default will be use. Depending on the coverage of the theme, it can
give a really inconsistent desktop. There's no “maximum” numbers of
icons a theme can provide, but a nice minimum is the freedesktop.org
standard (see for example Tango and Oxygen themes).

Before I packaged this theme, I asked the author to add
Iceweasel/Icedove icons before I even start packaging it for Debian,
with 0.7 release he added these icons and many others.

I believe it doesn't miss a lot of icons, it's quite contrary. Also,
it's worth noting that this theme may not be mature as Tango and/or
Oxygen, but it's work in progress and it should definitely be
something worth paying attention to.

For those who want to try this icon theme, package can be found here:
http://mentors.debian.net/cgi-bin/sponsor-pkglist?action=details;package=faenza-icon-theme

Besides inclusion of these icons, I was thinking of inclusion of the
gtk theme and everything else, Debian was always a superb distro, but
lacked looks if you ask me, and maybe it's time Squeeze changes this
since I believe Squeeze is one the most important Debian releases so
far.

Final look I was going for could be something like this:
http://foolcontrol.org/img/abs%20faenza.png

Hi there, Adnan.

Are you getting this icon set uploaded? I would like to use it, but it
needs some improvements.

I see that you don't use a version control for your packages. What about
using git and collab-maint? I can help you with some of that, if you want.

In the mean time, I have uploaded a (quick and dirty) new version of the
package to my PPA at Ubuntu's launchpad. [0]

Hi! I notice it's been some months since there's been any movement on
this bug. I'm a big fan of the icon theme and if you're busy I'm willing
to take it further. Thanks for your work so far!

Hey Jonathan,

There's actually been a lot of movement, I made the packages for every
version of Faenza so far, working great, even had the author package
the icons just for Debian. However when it got to mentors for me them
to upload it there would always be some kind of problem even when
there wasn't any. There's even one in mentors right now.

Therefor I had enough and feel free to take it over from here.

Thanks,

Adnan

Hello Adnan and Jonathan,

Wondering if there's been *any* movement at all in getting Faenza into
Debian?

Thanks,

Here's a quick update. I put in some work getting the package completely
clean and getting it in good shape for upload.

I uploaded it to mentors.debian.net, and it got rejected. The basis for
the rejection was licensing, since the package that Adnan originally put
together included the PNG versions of the icons, but not the SVG
versions. The concern was that the images were licensed under a GPL
license, so their source must be available. It was suggested that I look
at the PPA version in launchpad.net, since it may actually build the
PNGs from source at build time.

I checked the PPA version, it doesn't actually build the PNGs from the
SVGs, but it does include the SVGs. Since Debian freeze is imminent, I'm
going to give it a stab with an upload based on that package. I'll give
an update on this ticket and let you know how it went.

I have also been looking into polishing the package from the PPA.
FWIW, I found the following Google Code site for the Faenza Icon Theme,
which holds a download option for "source tarballs" containing the SVGs:

http://code.google.com/p/faenza-icon-theme/downloads/list

I think ideally debian/rules should really generate the PNGs from the
latest faenza-sources_*.tar.gz tarball found there.

I'll agree here, the tarball from PPA does not have

JFTR, I don't have any particular interest on this package, But I was helping
a friend to review it and notice all the effort that this will
require and since there is a lot of people willing to have this package on
Debian sharing the approach made by Jonathan can be a good idea.

Adnan, Did you care to set this as an RFP again?, if you are busy someone else
can help.

eerr, sorry for leave this not complete ↑ all the quality needed
to be included on Debian, it lacks references from the copyright, and I'm not
sure but I could bet that some of the icons will need to be removed due to
trademark issues.

As this theme is used, for example, on the front page of xfce.org, it's
strange to not have it in Debian, especially as it looks much nicer than
most.

With the freeze out of the way, would you care to push it forward?

You know what? It is a shame that we have this darned inertia thing.

I have packaged this set of icons a long time ago, but I had not (if I
remember correctly) adopted (at that time) a decent VCS.

So, I decided to get the work done again and I published my work at:

    https://github.com/rbrito/pkg-faenza-icon-theme

Do whatever you guys want with this (but, please, preserve the credits).

Adnan, I'm preemptively changing this from ITP to RFP. Please, change it
back if you still are really interested in packaging this thing.
